Restoring a jailbroken iPhone?

Thread Starter
Gonna need some pointers on this one. My friend gave me her iPhone 3GS to fix, she probably has a corrupted os and I'm gonna try restoring it for her. But I just now realized she is on t-mobile with a jailbroken phone.

I know that if I plug it in to iTunes, her phone will brick automatically. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, do you guys know how I can back up her contacts etc?

Her firmware is 3.1.2.

A.) You cannot brick an iDevice, ever.
B.) Plug it into her computer, push restore.
C.) Restore from backup
D.) Jailbreak the newest firmware.

I do not know if there is an unlock yet though, may have to Google that yourself.

Hmm.. Well last time I plugged in my friends jailbroken iPhone to give her some songs... Her phone just locked down completely.

If what you're saying is true... So I basically back up in iTunes then restore it? I prefer to restore as new tho. Then jailbreak it again?

I don't think you will be able to back up her contacts :\\ sorry.

To reset it, hold the top power button for 7 seconds, then, while still holding the top power button, press and hold the home button (the one with the square on it) for another 7 seconds. The phone should turn off, and when you plug it back in, iTunes will say something about restoring it and just follow the instructions. Now just update it to the latest iOS and you're done.

(I haven't done this in awhile, this is just from what I remember.)

It will not brick at all!

Plug it into iTunes restore it with the same firmware shes on now. (Option/Control + Restore)

You will have to download the appropiate .ipsw file

Google "iphone 3gs 3.1.2 .ipsw download"

Then jailbreak and unlock.

To backup contacts... Can you turn the phone on?

Try to transfer them to the sim card. (can you on iphone? Its been a while.)

What your talking about is sharing iTunes libraries between devices, which literally freaks them out.

If you restore as new, she will lose all her contacts and notes, etc.

Edit: Legal firmwares are here, if you are not looking to update to the newest iOS version 4.2.1 I think http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Firmware. Using this would make you have to Shift+click the restore button then choose the ipsw after you have downloaded it.

you will have to plug into itunes to attempt a backup

to do this, plug the phone into the computer and open up itunes

right click the phone on the left toolbar and select backup might take up to 20 minutes

if you want to attempt to redo her phone completely this is the best write up i can conjure up...

I warn you to do so at your own risk...I will not be responsible if this does not work properly for you but this is how I unlock phones for my friends (granted they have contacts backed up)

Her firmware is 3.1.2.
Be wearing activation of an iPhone requires an AT&T sim card here in the states so even if you were to theoretically restore the phone, iTunes would not allow you to proceed unless you could find someway to get a simcard in there to get through the activation.

with that said 3.1.2/3.1.3 is the BEST firmware to use to unlock on a 3G/3Gs (but that's IMO)

go here to download firmwares

assuming she has the SHSH hashes saved via the cydia server, you will have to first restore her phone to the targeted firmware (in this case 3.1.2) then you will have to edit the iTunes host file to bypass the Apple firmware verification as iTunes will no longer sign older firmwares (to directly deter jailbreaking) and have it contact the Saurik (cydia) server:

navigate to C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts

and add
Quote:
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
now restore to the 3.1.2 firmware, by holding control and hitting restore and choose the 3.1.2 firmware

once it's done you will need to activate the phone...put in any AT&T simcard to get pass this you can put the tmobile one back in once it's complete (should take just a few minutes)

Now you will use the simple pdf exploit to jailbreak by going to "www.jailbreakme.com" on the phone via safari

slide to jailbreak

let it work

you should now see Cydia on the spring board

open the app and upgrade the essentials--reboot the device.

Now go back into Cydia. go to the search tab and look for the ultrasn0w install and respring let the phone update and check to ensure that the top left of the phone now says T-Mobile (can take up to 10 minutes).

if you want Installous:

navigate to Cydia go to sources press the "edit" button then "add"

enter in
now install App Sync 3.0 and Installous

let me know if something is confusing this is hard to type on a phone... lol

There's a complicated issue around Apple's new method of thwarting jailbreakers, and essentially, you can NOT downgrade your system software just by doing shift-restore anymore. Apple uses signatures to verify with a server and uses the unique ID of the phone. When an updated firmware is released, the old one's stop getting signed and your iTunes will no longer allow installing. It isn't a simple patch because each iDevice has a unique ECID SHSH. If the phone was previously jailbroken and Cydia uploaded the iPhone's ECID SHSH signature to saurik's server, you will be able to restore to any firmware that has signatures backed onto saurik's server. Then you can modify your hosts file to redirect requests to the apple server to saurik's server and have iTunes think that the older ipsw is still getting signed. How to: http://www.saurik.com/id/12

It's complicated, but it must be done. Either that or upgrade to the newest iPhone software, but newer releases for old devices are laggy more often than not.

You can restore back to the same software version...

Can't you?

I know you can upgrade to beta firmware .ipsw via the Control+Update restore.

(I think thats the key combo...)
