Firstly, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT update to the latest firmware, there is no unlock yet. Since she's on T-Mobile, this is imperative.

Secondly, grab yourself a copy of TinyUmbrella Install it and when you're ready to restore, run TU and click "Start TSS Server." Apple now requires you to only restore to the latest firmware version, running a TSS server with TU tricks the restore into thinking you're on the latest firmware.

Third, jailbreak with Blackra1n and unlock with ultrasn0w.

As far as backing up her stuff, it should be synced with her computer. All she would have to do when you're done is plug her phone in and restore from backup.

If you have any questions, let me know.

There has never, ever, been a case of an iOS device "bricking."

There has, however, been lots of stories about it. It's always a "I had a friend who said his friend bricked his..." etc.

Really, you can't brick it. You can always restore it. If you had some kind of experience in the past where it locked up, you must have mistaken it for a brick.

you will want to stay with 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 as the 4.0 and above simply ruins iphones and touches. it's been a while since i have messed with apple products, as about a year ago i swore i would never buy another apple product for the fact that i disagree with their marketing and the fact that they are built to break.

a jailbreak program you can try is spiritjb.com which works with 3.1.3 and 3.1.2

i used to know a site that had direct downloads to all the firmware, hold on i will post link in a sec

also you will need to edit the hosts file as mentioned earlier.

finally, if the phone is not working, try holding the home button for 10 seconds then plugging it into your computer, it will be put into restore mode and then it will take you to itunes. after changing the hosts file you can hold shift and click restore, then select the 3.1.3 .ipsw and it will reinstall the OS.

when all this is done, go to cydia, install the tmobile thingy, and put the tmobile sim card in. restart the phone, and it should be good to go!

best way to go if she doesnt want to lose her contacts etc is to have her sync her phone with her computer and check the box in itunes save contacts to window contacts. for rendundancys sake save contacts to any option in there and check that theyre all there after the sync.

if the device is still in a semi working state go to cydia and check the top of the home screen for "SHSH ios 3.1.2, 3.1.3" etc if their there grab tiny umbrella and save the shsh blobs locally. start the tss server and get ready to restore. if the device isnt responding dont worry there is another way to get your shsh blobs but ill only go into that if i need to.

your going to need to restore in dfu mode. google/youtube how to or hit enter restore mode in tinyumbrella. shift click restore and find your saved 3.1.3/2 ispw 3.1.2 fw (not sure if you can download without registering) when the restore finishes it will give you an error, this is normal. ignore it if its error 1015. next for 3.1.2/3 you need to restore again. your still going to get error 1015. finally use tinyumbrella to kick it out of recovery and rejailbrek. been a long time since the 3.0 days and i dont remember what you need to jailbreak/unlock
