iPhone only Option for Medical Students?

So I was talking to this lady who is taking a degree in medicine. She is in her 4th year and I was telling her how I was looking into moving on to a medical degree after I take my 4 year degree in communication, which I will be finished next year.

Anyway she told me to give her my email and and she would email me if she found any useful info about the prerequisites and requirements.

So she pulled out her iPhone, it was probably a iPhone 3G or one of the older ones. But it was slow as hell, when I was typing in my email it would lag after every character and when you press buttons it would lag.

I was telling her that I was looking into getting a Samsung Galaxy S (more likely a Galaxy S 2). But she told me that I would be better off getting a iPhone because of all the apps they apparently use for it. Personally when my contract is up with my LG Neon in a couple months I plan on getting a smart phone, and more than likely I will not be getting anything with an apple on the back of it.

My question is this: would those same apps not also be available on android? Also would it not be better to just get an iPad if it was required to have these apps? I mean if I were a medical student I would want to get a tablet anyways, but personally I don't like apple and if I wanted to get a tablet or a smart phone I would lean more towards android which seams to be a far more open platform.

So am I missing something here? Do medical school really rely on apples platform that much?

On a side note though I guess it worst comes to worst I could just use my second gen ipod touch (which is so crappy I can't even have a background that's not black).

The laggy typing is only on the 3G. It's smooth on the 3GS or later.

I currently have a 3G, but I've typed on my friend's 3GS, so I'm speaking from personal experience. You would probably be getting the iPhone 4, or next gen once it releases, so don't worry.

As for Apple being the only option for med students, I don't know what kind of med apps are available for Android. I know there's that Human Atlas one for Apple that I could see being really useful.

Cool rant bro

i do not know if they are only on iOS but they are developed first for iOS like many apps are.

Anyways there is no slowing down on the newest device, easy to pick on a device that's almost 3 years old you know?

I have to agree with this. The iPhone 4 is significantly faster than the 3G. It's noticeable any time I've used my bro's VeriPhone 4 or my roommates ATT iPhone 4.

Welcome to another reason why the Apple app ecosystem > Android marketplace.

Developers stick with what's popular and makes them more money.

OT: I know what you're talking about though, a lot of medical apps are on the App Store that aren't available on Android. Myself and co-workers use a lot of them for work and our co-workers with Droids don't have the same options.

I must say, I have an iPhone 4 and notice no slow-downs or lag when doing absolutely anything. It is quite responsive at all times.

And this is coming from someone who does not care much at all for Apple, and really wanted an Android phone (particularly the HTC Evo or the Droid X) but didn't like any of the options on AT&T (which I had to stay with, because of my current situation). So I picked the iPhone 4. I do like it, it's nice. But I do think I would have preferred an Android phone (then again, I'm not exactly a fan of Apple).

I'm not sure if they're available for the Android, but back when I was using an iPod Touch they had an absolutely great number of reference apps for doctors and medical students. It's one of the things I miss the most switching to a Zune. It's not so much the platform as it is the availability of those apps on the platform.

Although now I'm not sure, because the last time I looked at either app marketplace was two years ago.

Only option is a strange way of putting it. Phones are now general purpose infotainment devices. Better option, certainly seems that way, but things change... Palm used to have the medical handheld market, haha.

It's not a matter of one device being superior to the other at this point.

Honestly, right now, it's a matter of the App Store having, like, exponentially more apps than the Android Marketplace. Especially Medical apps.

My fiancée is a PA and I can't believe the amount of med apps she has on her iPhone and iPad. She actually just dropped $100 for a single app the other day. Yeah..

Ya just to update you guys on this. I got a reply from her via email and I looked up all the apps that she told me about and they were all available on blackberry and android. Which makes me happy, I also think that the android marketplace will only improve as it gains market share so by the time I get into med school (if that happens) I should be able to confidently kick apple to the curb and go android or rim.
