First Crysis 2 now Homefront (leaked) - Page 3

This is actually moderately helpful. Even if you download it now, you wont be able to play as it uses Steamworks. You'd still have to wait until it actually releases. That said, if Steam doesn't have a pre-load up a day or two in advance, I'm just gonna download it from somewhere then copy the files over to my Steam folder when it officially unlocks.

Did the same thing for BC2 since that was another game that didn't have a pre-load.

Because you can't just wait to ship out the product to the retailer the day of release. Also, you have to actually make the media for the games, so these two places alone are easy to get stuff leaked. People usually do it either for money or if theyre a scene group, to get it out first.

Combine any of that with the whole scene competition/race to get stuff out and you get leaks. There's nothing the companies can really do, unless they catch someone and then someone else will just do it. You also have the blackmarket, where a lot of money is made in places like China for stuff like this.

Yes i know, but its used for far less good than evil.

I work with P2P network on a daily basis. Windows XP work group system is all p2p based. It was originally intended for companies and what not to share resources, but its quickly been compromised and used for other reasons.

I think you guys are confusing the difference between the Crysis 2 leak and this Homefront "leak".

Crysis 2's leak was such a big deal because the game isn't yet complete. It was a work in progress in which Crytek was still working on, and it must have came straight from Crytek themselves.

Homefront, on the other hand, has already gone gold. It's slated for release on the 15th, which means THQ has already started to mass-produce hard copies of this game, such as DVD's and physical media. This Homefront leak is ripped directly from this physical media, which is taken from major retail outlets. This isn't uncommon in the pirating scene, where you can see a game hit torrent sites as early as a few weeks before release, to a few days.

I see it as free advertising. I mean you may get someone who cannot afford to buy the game. He will pirate it and then tell someone who can afford it and may not like piracy how good it is. That person then buys it. Or... you may download the game and find it's worth buying. I don't think gaming would be as popular if it was not for piracy.

With sophisticated DRM piracy could be wiped out. I think they don't because it could be the end of PC gaming. Only true gamers will buy games and all the casual games will migrate to consoles.

Great. The thing is all these events are scaring developers away from making PC Games and even resenting us as a whole. But it isn't all of our fault.

The way this mostly happens is some worker at THQ or EA gets abused and he just gets super pissed and well releases the finished product to certain Torrent Websites! Or maybe it is hackers, and therefore these guys need to bulk up network security!

It isn't JUST the PC consumers faults that this is happening, but yet all of these developers make it seem like something it isn't!
