MSI R6950 Twin Frozr II OC Radeon HD 6950 input please - Page 3

it's been some time now .... and unlocking is more known how-to

but ... since this card doesnt have dual bios,
is it possible to do the unlocking ptocedure on it ?

i mean ... is the main and only bios LOCKED or not ?

someone can confirm this ? (by reading and flashing same bios back) ?

for other cards with switch ... procedure is simple as :

- switch to position 2 (writeable one bios)
- dump bios with GPU-Z
- load into RBE, tick option "Unlock Shaders", eventually unlock maximum OC limit to 1100MHz
- save bios
- use Ati WinFlash to flash saved bios
- rebbot ... and u are on 6970 ...

if somebody can answer .... i want to buy 2 of these babies

b.r.
Alex

They don't unlock, and technically the TFIIs never did.

I have 2 twin frozr ii oc 6950 and had no problems unlocking shaders on either card.
Keep in mind I did not flash a 6970 bios on top of a 6950 card instead I altered the existing BIOS and then oc them to 6970 core clocks.
It is best not to believe the naysayers no one really knows what cards will work for sure unless they are speaking from personal experience other then that it's just speculation I was told that twin frozr ii will not unlock only twin frozr iii would which is just not true.
Research for your self and then decide if you want to try it or not. There is plenty of info out there if you have twin frozr ii pm me and I will give you a link to the guide I used just know there are risk when flashing the bios!

Hey all, first-time poster long-time blah blah...

I'm interested to know how you got on, mechanix565. I bought a MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 Twin FrozR II 2048MB GDDR5 to go with my ASUS M4A89GTD PRO (USB 3) and I've had a bit of a nightmare.

The second DVI output seems totally inoperative, I've tried swapping monitors, cables, drivers (stock, v11.5, v11.6). (Note that the previously installed GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB worked fine on both outputs).

It's been back on a RMA but they (Overclockers UK) said they tried it on 3 systems and both worked fine >:| £20 (~$30) down the drain right there.

It's since been tried with VGA bridge in and out (gpuz reports correct 8x/16x swtich) and even a totally new install of windows, in case the nvidia drivers were playing havoc with the ATI ones... no joy.

So far as performance goes, I can't complain at all, she runs a dream. Just won't run 2 monitors

The next step is to start digging through that oh-so-comprehensive BIOS and see if I'm doing anything dumb. But then why did the 8800 work?

the only other thought is my PSU, it's "only" 500W, but this isn't a problem when loaded, it's from boot.

I had to RMA my Twin Frozr II OC edition 6950 due to instability. I was able to get it working for like 2 minutes and then never could get it working again. The factory overclock was garbage...enough so that I RMA'd it. I was wooed by the pretty two fan design, but that soon subsided after I couldn't get it to work. I instead bought a Sapphire 6950 2gb Flex and have been thrilled with it. I haven't figured out how to unlock voltages yet on it, but the card is great. I have had alot of luck with Sapphire cards and think I will be sticking to them from now on...

Sorted! (And sorry for the hijack but it is relevant. )

Looking at the specification a friend realised that the card only supports one analogue output.

Quote:
D-SUB Output 1 (optional, via DVI to D-Sub adaptor)
I find this a little off as all my previous cards with dual DVI's (nVidia 7900 GTX 512 and 8800 GTS 320) supported dual analogue. But hey, I guess that'll teach me not to upgrade my rig and leave the monitors behind.

Anyway, I still have my dual output, I just needed to enable something in the BIOS (if I remember what I'll be sure to post, whatever it was had to go from AUTO (default) to ON or ENABLED) and I'm using the onboard Radeon HD4290 to power the second monitor. Ok, I'm never gonna run the best games on it, buy Crysis ran pretty well on high on that screen.

So, wrangling it back on topic: with the mobo you have,mechanix565, the MSI 6950 Frozr II (2) works fine, if you want two analogue displays though, you gotta use the onboard for one of them.
