I vote on keeping it unlocked. No sense of the locking it and maybe finding it won't go any higher. Plus the number of threads for what application/games/etc that uses them.

i have a slightly similar situation as yours with my lanbox. using the x2 555 be, i was able to unlock it to a x3. however, the oc was rather unsuccessful. my guess is that the extra core isn't good or needed more voltage than i was willing to put through it. however, i found i was able to leave the cpu at x2 and run it up to 4.0ghz on stock voltage and have it be 100% stable. i mostly play bc2 with the lanbox, and i find the gaming to be a little better running as x2 at 4.0ghz, than a x3 at 3.2ghz.

with your x2 being able to run as a x4, the only thing i can tell you is to try locking the cores down and seeing how far you can go with it. if it isn't much more than what you could get with the x4, i would stay x4. if your x2 clocks are noticeably higher, i would go x2.

make sure to stress test as well. and you could throw in a vantage or 3dmark11 run for comparisons.

That's up to you - if there's nothing you need that uses 4 cores, go for it.

just mild gaming and folding

will bc2 run noticeably worse on a x2?

Folding will use 4 cores more than 2 most definitely. Not sure about gaming.
