New at overclocking, please help.

post #1 of 38
Thread Starter
I have a gigabyte ma770t-ud3p board holding a Phenom ii x2 550BE processor and Arctic cooling HSF. Its stock 3.1 GHz is fine , but I have tried overclocking and failed. @3.6GHz its stable in windows for ~3 hours (immediately with Prime 95), then BSOD's. 3.7GHz with .050 overvolt is BSOD immediately. 3.7 @ .100 overvolt is BSOD in boot up . 3.7 @ .150 overvolt doesnt POST . Currently got the MOBO battery out to reset it to factory.

Can someone help me find an OC that is stable at 4.0GHz?

Try 1.425 and 20x multiplier if that doesnt work bump it up to 1.450 and onand on but don't go over 1.55 that's the absolute max on air.

didnt work. Its back at stock here. Tried 20x at 1.425, 1.450, all the way to 1.55. Didnt try past that point, but all the ones tried were BSOD during boot.

did u unlock any cores?
post #6 of 38
Some chips over clock ok, some don't at all. I have my quad from 3.2 to 3840 prime 95 stable. Bit it won't go any higher, not that it's getting hot but it just won't go any faster. It's more luck of the draw.

Unlock cores, wouldnt even know where to start.
@maelthras
seems that I can not get any at all. Its not stable at 3.2GHz even. I mean, Cummon AMD, .1GHz... Id expect that from Intel, but AMD, the better overclockers...

Ok, if u didnt unlock cores, then doesnt matter. i was asking coz if u did, then it may affect ur overall overclocking stability. i had the same processor as u before, and i had an extra core unlocked, and the chip wouldnt go pass 3.8ghz at all. theoretically u could have 2 extra cores unlocked and turn ur x2 into a x4, but its all down to luck really. oh and of course, to unlock any cores, ur mobo needs to have a sb750 chipset (or sb710), dunno wot board u have?

anyway, if ur new to overclocking, then perhaps the easiest way to overclock ur system is to use AOD (AMD OverDrive, u can get it from amd website). i know a lot of ppl are against software overclock, but personally i think AOD is a pretty decent starting point. it gives u a rough idea where ur systems max overclock potential is, once you find that out, u can fine tune ur overclock in bios. i'd say its worth a try.
