New at overclocking, please help. - Page 4

Thread Starter
if you would have read, I am not running BO. The games I am running (found this out from EA) are only hyperthreaded (two cores two threads or 1 core two threads), quad will not help. Temps are Stable under load at 55*C stock. I have it running stock right now (well, till the GPU went down the drain). It will be a while till I get another GPU to try it again.

55C seems a little high for stock temps... is that while running Prime95? I know my 955BE runs at 25C stock temp, while playing WoW it runs at 30C and MAYBE hits 55C tops while running Prime95.

Overclocking really won't make much of a difference when gaming IMHO, you are better off unlocking the extra cores, the reason your system is lagging while playing games is because the games you are playing are using resources that your OS and other components are drawing from. If you unlocked 4 cores then you have 1-2 extra cores available to run the rest of the system.

Get yourself a decent aftermarket CPU Cooler (ranges from $30-$100) and then consider overclocking if you must do it. The quickest way to kill a computer is for it to overheat consistently.

*EDIT* It would be easier for people to help you out if you posted your system specs in your signature, go under UserCP and click "Add System" from the left bar, fill in the blanks and click save. This will allow other users to see your components and potentially help you further/faster.

He already has an arctic cooler which should be fine but those temps are high for stock, maybe he applied to much thermal paste?

Quite possibly.

OP try reseating the CPU cooler, first clean off ALL thermal paste with a cotton swab and ISO. Then apply a PEA SIZED amount of thermal paste (I use Arctic Silver).

Maybe also try disabling the CPU Fan speed controller in your BIOS to ensure it is running at full speed. But yes your temps are rather high.

I applied a bead about the size of a grain of rice. Thats what I was told elsewhere to do.

Its not lagging while gaming. Its got an artic cooler CPU cooler.
As for specs, Its A Gigabyte Mobo (possibly bad), BE 550 (Possibly bad), 4Gb Patriot 1333, 500GB W.D. black, GTS 260 (now known good). Its not posting at all, so I still need to get that sorted out before I can continue.

Is it possible that the CPU was on its way out anyway?

Wolfe, I actually just recently had your same motherboard, and it started dying the moment I started to OC it.. I also had the same CPU unfortunately, what broke my CPU is that I bent 2 pins (without knowing it), one power conductor and the other one negative but the power one, when I put it in fried the CPU -_-. But the board was on its way out anyways, might be whats happening to you, as well.

I have tested the CPU on a friends machine, and It would start. Stable at 3.8 GHz with only a slight bump of the Vcore.
his 955 would not run on my board, so the board is shot.
