2.5" Sata II drive in a Sata I laptop?

Thread Starter
I have a Compaq F572US that im trying to revive. I need a new HHD for it... It currently has a Hitachi 80GB sata 1.5gbs drive in it.... looking on newegg the cheapest 1.5GB/s drive is 50 bucks. But I can get a sata II western digital black drive for the same price..... If I try to install a Sata3.0Gb/s drive in a laptop that has a port for 1.5Gb/s, will it work?

Thanks in advance!

SATA is backwards compatible. You'll be alright. While you're reinstalling and all that, change the drives to AHCI before you reinstall windows, better drive performance

No AHCI on "SATA I".

Too bad then... Oh well, only a laptop drive and the main point is that it will work at all.

Yes, it works. The data connection just runs at the slower speed.

So I guess it wouldn't matter if I bought a WD Black or Blue drive? Since they would all be limited to the same Sata I speed...
