How to transfer 5tb of data

Hey guys,

I've had my home "server" PC for the past year and something. Its just a low-end Athlon II system using the integrated raid chipset to run 4x 2TB HDDs in Raid5, resulting in a 6tb array.

All it was doing was letting me DL stuff through the nights and offer storage on the network, so I could shut down my main system through the nights etc. I've been putting more and more stuff (ftp server, apache server, remote desktoping etc) on this system and decided its time to upgrade it. So now I've got a new PC with a proper raid controller.

My question: I need to transfer the Raid5 array, or rather the data from it somehow from the old PC to the new. What would be the easiest way? Its roughly 5tb of data. The new PC doesnt have any HDDs in it other then 2x 250s for system drive in Raid1. I want to re-use the 2TB drives. Problem is that I need to put all that data somewhere, then wipe those drives and re-create the raid5 array in the new PC.

Whats my options?

Thanks,

tom

If your RAID array is built on a PCI controller card, you should just be able to move the array and sort the chipset drivers out after boot.

However if not, you are going to need 5TB of free space on other storage media... Hard drives or tapes.

I am moving the array from an integrade GeForce 8300 chipset raid to a HP p420 raid PCIe card.

So, I take it Im pretty much screwed and indeed need another 5tb to temporarly store the data while I move the HDDs. Which means I really need to copy it 2 times - once to the temporary storage and then back to the main HDDs once they are in the new server.

Unfortunately yes.

Yeah you're kind of up the creek. You could always buy 4 more 2 tb drives, make them into a new array on the new controller. After copying from the old drives, add them to the new array and expand the parition. 14 tb of beastliness.

The cheapest 2TB drives I can get here are 100eur a pop.

I really dont feel like dropping 400€ on HDDs...

Even if he had a full megabit upload 24/7 it would take almost 400 days to transfer just 4 TB of data.....

And then he would have to download it again, even at 4 megabit that would take nearly 100 days..
