AMD Athlon X3 425 - Unlock 4th core?

Thread Starter
Hi, I have an AMD Athlon X3 425 RANA cpu and I would like to unlock the forth core, if it is possible given it is a rana one. Right now I have applied a successful 3.7GHz overclock with the 3 cores. Can I have something similar with 4 cores? What do I need to do, disable, tweak etc?

Thank you for reading this...

First, set all to stock, then unlock. AthII x3 can be unlocked to x4, but there is no guarantee that it will unlock ok. Could be unstable at stock.

I did test to see if I could unlock it 2 weeks ago but I wasn't successful. I was at stock but because I didn't know I hadn't disabled some bios settings like cool cpu and staff like that that could cause the problem. If I disable these(btw: which do I need to disable?) and try to unlock it at 3.7GHz that I am now? It will probably need Clear CMOS afterwards, won't it?

What's best for me is to find someone who has done the exact same thing on this cpu so that I won't spend hours & hours on top of it when the chances of success aren't that good...

I recommend you add VRM cooling first.

That boards supports 125W CPUs. No reason why it should have trouble unlocking a 4th core making it a 95W CPU.

Unlocking it is only half the battle then you need to stablize it... I have a 420 at home that unlocked but I couldn't get it passed the windows log in logo before it would lock up. I added Voltage and still no luck, there are many many reason why that 4th core could be locked.
My advice is play with it if you want but if you NEED 4 cores just buy a quad.

I agree with that but the cpu is somehow "new" so I won't buy a new one. I just wanted to know if anyone else here has had success unlocking the fourth core of this Rana AMD Athlon X3 425 cpu.
