eyefinity, do extra monitors need DP?

When running 3 monitors in a display group in eyefinity, I know at least 1 has to be using displayport. The thing I haven't been able to find is the requirement for DP on any extra monitors. If I go eyefinity, I'll be using 3 x Dell u2211h in portrait with DP on all, so that won't be a problem. But I also like to run at least 1, probably 2, other standalone monitors for any landscape needs (like watching videos).

If I get a card that has the 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, 2xDP, I was thinking for the displaygroup, use the 2 DP outputs, and the HDMI (which the u2211h has as well). Then I'd have the 2 DVI outputs for my old monitors.

And if I get an eyefinity 6, I was hoping to just use the passive cables HERE, with the 2 mini-DP to DP still in the displaygroup. So can each of the extra monitors work without the need to use DP? If I'm dropping like $600 on new IPS panels and $250 on a GPU, I really don't want to also drop another $75 on an active dongle, just to get my DVI screens to play nice. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

EDIT: I guess adapters aren't really $75, but still. I hate adapters

Only the Eyefinity setup would need one display port connection. Even though I had three u2211h's, I used one DP and 2 DVI (not sure why), but I could have used all three DP port connections if my card allowed it.

You can just use a passive adapter for the extra screens (not in eyefinity) if you buy the "eyefinity" card, but for the three dells, you mine as well use DP's for all of them.

Hey guys,
I have a question.
I'm about to buy monitors for ATI eyefinity setup. The monitor I want to buy does not have a "displayport" connection, can I connect all three with VGA? From what I have read I need a DP adapter, what is that?

Thanks everyone,
Asus956

Only one has to use the displayport. On my eyefinity setup i used both DVI connections and the displayport connection with a display port to vga adapter.

what monitors are you looking at? btw, i'd use DVI over VGA, all new monitors should have it. as far as DP, if your monitor doesn't have a DP port, you'll have to use an ACTIVE adapter. passive won't work, unless a monitor in your display group is already using a DP connection, which it doesn't sound like in your case.

So to sum up, I'd use 2xDVI to DVI, and 1x DP to DVI using an active adapter. Unless you've got an eyefinity 6 with only DP ports, then you'll have to use all DP to DVI, with only one needing to be active.

EDIT: welcome to OCN! if you fill out your system specs in the user CP, you'll be able to get some more detailed advice without people having to ask what hardware you're running

Don't buy monitors that only do VGA, other than that the minimum output you want on the display is DVI. You'll need a 30 dollar "active" dvi to miniDP adapter.
