That would work, but you'll have to install alot of drivers, as it'll preload the default drivers for the system you installed them on.

Also, Careful about the Viruses, I suggest Isolating the drive first, by making it the only Hard drive connected.

If you go into BIOS you should find Integrated devices (Legacy select options) where you can turn 'USB emulation' ON. Then put a bootable USB flash drive in and when you reboot, press F12. Booting from the USB flash drive will be an option.

How to make a Win7 install USB flash drive:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/m.../dd535816.aspx

The hard drive sounds broken. Test it in a different computer. Also, try a different cord.

I stand corrected... with the latest bios (A09) which came out in 2005, you can boot to usb.... But after the bios upgrade make sure and go into the bios and go to Integrated Devices- (Legacy Select Options) make sure USB Emulation is set to ON. Then reboot with the bootable usb thumb drive in the machine and hit F12 for the boot menu and you should find an option to boot to usb.
If he has a Dell XP reinstall cd laying around, just pop that puppy in there and load it.... it will not ask for a key as long as it detects an Optiplex or Latitude bios....

EDIT: Don't know why i just copied exactly what you put up there about bios settings! Doh!

Also there are no drivers for Win7 (officially) for the GX260, so some stuff may not work....

Well, I was able to install XP on his computer cause I found one of my old disks and it worked with his key. The only problem is that I can't get it to go on the internet. I installed all the drivers I though were for the network but it still won't work. It doesnt even have the network not connected symbol. Here is a link to the dell driver site for the network drivers. Can you guys tell me which drivers I should install?

I downloaded that driver pack but when you unzip it, there is no installation guide or any way to install it to a computer.

If you go into device manager, there should be one or more items with an exclamation point through it. Right click -> properties -> try looking for drivers for those items in the folder where you just unzipped the driver pack (also check the files from dell).
