I7 950 runs hot even with NH-D14

Hi guys, i got my i7 950 seated on my Rampage III Extreme and held down by my Noctua NH-D14 and i see some high temps coming out of it despite having this stuff.

First off

Note this is in stock and i got my NH-D14 fans going 100% aswell.

I also got 6gb of Corsair Dominator GT DHX+ 2000mhz specced memory which wont boot with the X.M.P profile which i would also gladly appreciate help with.

First off i'd be happy if anyone got any tips on how the hell i can lower my temps, this is inside my Corsair Graphite 600T case and i got the 2 200mm case fans on 100% aswell and it doesn't appear to be helping temps much either.

I got a GTX 580 with the reference cooler so it blows the air out and doesn't heat up my other components as much and yet it still reaches ~70c in prime95 stock.

I've tried removing and reapplying the cooler a few times (with new thermal paste ofc) and it doesn't improve temps (i'm using AS5).

Any help will be greatly appreciated and i would love getting this beast up and running at around 4ghz with atleast 1600mhz ram (Unless this is hardware related that i cannot get it to clock well at all).

I've read all kinds of guides and 200x20 wont boot at all, or error in a few seconds in prime with up to 1.35vcore (which i tried, reached 98c after a few seconds and BSOD'd)

Here's a pic of how it looks inside near the CPU.

It's a bit messy because i keep trying new stuff, will do a final good cable rewiring when i get this stuff to work as intended. (Not that it should impact the temps THAT much as it is anyways)

my friend has Noctua 12 or something... I don't know, but the one you got is better than my friends.

He has his CPU overclocked, but gets about 53-56C, but looking at your's it's very hot for stock I think you should re-seat the Heatsink, and apply thermal paste that is half the sized of a pea

Did you take the plastic off the bottom of the heatsink? Sorry, I have to ask. I've seen literally 10+ posts like yours where the person failed to do so.

My 950 runs at 1.0V at 3.2 GHz and peaks at 52C or so in prime 95 using my megahalems. Something is definitely wrong if you are hitting 70C at stock speeds.

EDIT: This is using only 1000 RPM CPU fans. I prefer silence over max performance.

Yeah i will try that again i guess, almost run out of my tube of AS5 now... i always do that method though, roughly the size of an uncooked grain of rice in mid and then put the cooler on... doesn't work well here though it seems :/

A valid question But yeah i did remove the cover on the heatsink.

Btw, isn't your mobo same as mine? As far as i know Formula is for AMD and Extreme for Intel? - Nvm i looked it up Was a bit confused as i first got a Crosshair III Formula instead of my rampage extreme when i bought it -.-

No the Formula is a simpler version of the extreme with less PCIe slots and costs about $100 less. It is still Intel 1366 socket.

Might've bought that one instead of mine if i had known But yeah atleast i'm happy with my sexy mobo

I'm reckoning it might be a CPU related issue or something, is this enough for a reason to even attempt an RMA? Tbh if it is, i will RMA and upgrade to i7 970 just cause it is a lot less hot Btw does it also support HT? (Not that i need it anyway i reckon)

Gonna play around in my BIOS in rougly an hour and see if i can get anything better goin, will clear CMOS etc beforehand aswell. Anyone got any specs i should attempt that should pretty much be possible on all chips?

the stuff on the cooler is good. If you took of plastic. ANd u know not to put alot of as5, it has medal in it and can shout out stuff. Thats why i like ocz freeze and mx-3 and icd7 <--from worst to best . I had ocz then mx-3 now icd7 from ocz to mx-3 was 2 degs but from mx-3 to icd7 dropped 5-10 degs. Im on water. Use a pea amount force down and twist 15degs left and right then center and mount. dont let cooler come off it as airpockets will form and raise temps , also as5 needs like 200 burn in time. of full load then off full load off ect.

Alright, will reapply the cooler with your instructions as i reset CMOS etc.

I don't know if icd7 is available in sweden though, never heard of it.

But is my temps normal considering it hasnt burned in yet then? How big a diff can one expect once it has burned in?

Wish i could say the same for mine :/ What thermal paste you using?

I will be busy for roughly 30 minutes, will post back when i've reapplied stuff etc so expect to hear how it is running in roughly an hour, will post idle temps then atleast and whatever clock i've managed to reach.
