I7 950 runs hot even with NH-D14 - Page 2

CPU's are different, they are all dependent on the heat transfer between the core & the IHS, after that is where our cooling, tim etc come into play..

Some will run hotter than others. Mine is also a bit warm, even on H2o I see peak temps around 75c @ 4.0 with HT on...

well im stressing my rig back out, trying for 4.2 i got 480 rad and heatkillers 3.0 waterblock. i still have gpu block in loop not hooked up and right now 69 degs hottest i got. i also got ht on. I use linx i hate prime 95. Im @ 1.365 volts. Ic diamond 7 is the 7 carted they make a biger tube called icd20. they sell it everywhere. unlike as5 its gots diamonds in it, they transfer heat 5 times better then as5. Also if you got extra paste u can mount the cooler with peas size and then look @ it and then clean it off. because u never want to remount the same cooler with paste on it, air will bubbles will rasie temps. thats why i used a grain of rice and then turn it, works great. report back with temps and volts. @ 2.8 ghz (stock for 930) i used .95 volts. 3.2 1 volt 4ghz i used 1.25 4.2 i need (testing again) @ 1.365 volts. mite just go back down to 4ghz. with 580 in loop adds 5 degs and i like under 70 degs on cpus. but up to 90 u r fine.

Well so far all i've done is clear CMOS, running prime at stock speed now (haven't remounted cooler yet) and lowered fan speeds to 70% (~1000rpm) @ 1.2vcore (which is slightly lower than when on Auto btw) and it was 42c in Idle according to Realtemp, now it is at 67c after 10 minutes in prime95 (btw i've turned off all power saving so at idle it was still running 3066mhz even though it wasnt stressed)

I still find this quite hot.. Guess i'll try a remount but i honestly dont have much hope for this CPU

Tbh i think i will remount cooler, turn off HT and see what i can hit.. I don't REALLY need HT i just want it on for seeing the 8 threads

Btw is 1.3 qpi/dram thingy too much for running my RAM at 1600mhz? I haven't touched timings yet so they are on 9-9-9-24-1T right now, 1.64 Dram volt atm.

You should try a reseat, use just a small dab of TIM dead center of the cpu and try to keep the D14 from moving when you tighten it down..

Mine on a lapped TRUE with yate loon high speed fans push>pull would hit 72-75c at 3.8GHz @ 1.29v HT On...

So some do run hot.. Looks like you have one, 42c idle is about average. Most are between 36 - 40 from what I have seen.

Ambient (room temp) does play a big part of it all.

But hitting 65 - 68 at stock is a bit high and seems like it needs a reseat to be sure..

The paste that comes with the Noctua cooler is just as good as the As5. Theres like a +/- 1*c difference in performance of the two. So you should have plenty of paste to do a remount. When I mounted mine I used the smaller than pea size drop method. My temps were a lil warm so I remounted and this time I spread it with a credit card. (very thin) and mounted. I get 26-30* idle and 50-56* load. I feel that is acceptable on a 950 since they tend to run warm anyways.

Those temps are good Yeah indeed i still got the paste i got with my noctua, that tube is unopened, meant my AS5.

Just did a reseat now and i'm running prime to see what temps it will reach now, as for my room temp i don't know tbh but i reckon it isn't above 25c atleast, got my window open and it's quite cold outside.

I feel that is slightly chilly in the room but nothing that really affects me Idle when i started up was lower (Though the temp in room was a bit lower than before that too, had window fully opened while reseating the CPU cooler. Idle was 37c and has so far, in 5 minutes reached 62c on the hottest core with prime95.

Does anyone know why my memory wont boot with XMP though? They are specced for 2000mhz and i cant get even close to it, like 1800 is my max i've reached so far, with 1.5 qpi or w/e it's called. (Luckily i didn't run that for long since it was way too high for my liking)

Edit - At the same time running as before i re-seated it, it maxed out at 64c so that is slightly better than before. Will attempt to clock without HT on in a while and see how it goes.

Ran prime95 for 30 min now and it topped out at 69c @ 3.6ghz HT on and this is so far the best i can do, tried 3.8 with and without HT and it wouldn't boot even at 1.3vcore, now i'm running 1.2vcore.

Sounds like some people in this thread have some golden chips. Sounds like you don't. I don't think my 930 is great but it will run 3.8 at stock volts (1.21250) with LLC at level 1. However, I bsod fairly quick at 4.0 with vcore of 1.25. Anyway, I bought a d14 in hopes of getting great temps. I didn't. My lapped cogage true spirit with pushpull fans beats it by a degree. Max core is 68-69 @ 3.8 with vcore 1.21250. I checked my d14 with a precision straight edge and it is concave. Its being rma'd right now. I didn't want to lap a $90 cooler. You should check yours. Search for my post about horrible performance of he d14 being beat by the cogage true spirit in the air cooling forim if you want to read more. Btw, a silver arrow is on the way. No way it will be concave, I hope.

Ok, i guess that's pretty much the only thing i got left to check Sure hope it isnt such a thing, might be my CPU that is concave though :/ Gonna suck if it is... But tbh if it turns out to be very concave, can i RMA it then? (Think i'd probably switch to Sandy Bridge then, would be my 3rd RMA on this forsaken setup already if i gotta RMA the processor)

Funny how i started out with a Sabertooth X58, i7 950 and Vengeance memory... Mobo had a faulty northbridge getting insanely hot (90c) and memory's cooling fin thingy just came right off one stick -.- I think i've the worst luck when it comes to fixing my OWN computer, every time i help a friend or something build a computer it turns out a beast but mine just faces problem after problem.

Gonna check the CPU and cooler in a while i guess (probably this weekend) and if it is any problem with the CPU i will RMA it and tell em to give me a 2600K instead and sell my mobo and RAM seperate and just get a good new mobo and 16gb of XMS3 memory or something...

well to me your volts for chip are high. for my 930 i need .95volts to run stock . 1.0 for 3.2 4.0 i need your volts u got for stock 1.25 for 4.2 i need 1.365 Try lowering down volts to 1.0 for stock. because u did reset the cooler with new paste so that cant be problem. But ya lower volts and report back .
