i7-870 clocking at 533mhz under load.

Thread Starter
My new desktop with an i7-870 seemed to be getter slower every time I booted it up and under the same load was doing less every day. Today I downloaded cpu-z to see if I could see anything wrong and the first thing I noticed was that core speed was flat on 533mhz (instead of normal clock of 2.93ghz or something) almost all the time, occaisionally ticking up to 666mhz under a load that had cpu usage at ~80-90% there even just navigating through the control panel and that. I'm absolutely new to doing stuff with my computer apart from using it and cleaning it out but I've heard mention of SpeedStep or something. Is this speedstep gone wrong where it isnt adjusting even when it should be and what can I do to fix my problem?

Hey there, shame to hear that, i'm looking at getting one of those puppies too,

When you say "apart from cleaning it out" do you mean taking every part out? or just giving it a dust down? because if you've been taking the CPU out of the socket and stuff, that may have caused some damage, download HW monitor, from the same place as CPU-z and give us a temp on each core, it seems to me like only one core is activated (which can be done via the bios)

any amount of screen shots might help too.

Cleaning it out probably wasn't the right phrase sorry, I'm not even sure what I meant by that really XD. I didn't take CPU out of the socket, when I got it I took out all of the RAM sticks and took off the intel fan to make sure I'd gotten what I paid for. Bit paranoid about new ebay computers. I didn't unseat the chip and the ram was the corsair ram I was expecting (Everything went back in place (I think) and if I'd badly replaced the fan I think it would have been very unhappy).

The only actual major thing I've done to it was switch out the force 680w psu for a new corsair hx850. Right now I want to get it back up to what it should be before I start playing with the stuff.

I'll download that and get back to you in a second.

Here's a screenshot of the HWmonitor, not sure how to interpret this but it seems like its running hot.

Thats not under any load but running the HWmonitor.

**** its overheating thats why. reseat the cooler now!~!!!

the core temps are suppose to be in the 70º and blow, that's 70 under load. right now the cpu is under clocking trying to prevent it self from frying.

Stop reading this and replace the cooler, mate that is gonna kill you're chip! 70c at full load MAX!

Make sure you're using thermal paste too, that might be why>?

I haven't been reading this on my desktop, I've been worried about it for a few days so I've only been turning it on for my tests. I'll pick up some thermal paste tomorrow; I thought it looked really thin and patchy when I was looking when I first got it but didn't know what it meant. Thanks for the advice.

Also in the BIOS when I first booted up the computer before I touched anything it was giving me the same 88c for the processor as it was just then (new to this, didn't know it was bad, was just looking and not touching), I'll be sure to have a word to the seller... might there be long term problems from this because he said he'll replace stuff if it breaks?

Thank god I went looking for help.

Artic Silver 5 Thermal Grease
CoolerMaster HTK-002 Thermal Paste
CoolerMaster PTK-002 Premium Thermal Paste
OCZ Freeze Thermal Compound

Which one of these would you recommend, these are the only options at the closest store to me and are cheaper than ordering off ebay, plus I can't wait that long as I can't afford to not have the more powerful desktop running much longer.
