WoW isn't a FPS though.

Having 1000 people in a relatively small area seems awesome to me, WoW can have 2k servers, but the area is so huge you never actually see that amount together. Mount and Blade Warband has standard 64 player servers some 128 player servers and the 22nd Battalion group managed 222 player server , where everyone is bunched together and its crowded, but fun as hell. Yeah, I'm sort of confused about this. Just because something has never been done before doesn't automatically make it a big deal.

Blizzard could easily patch WoW to give everyone guns and force them into first person mode to shatter that record with no problem, but what would be the point?

Doesn't EVE Online have like 20-40k players on at one time? Hell, even the epic wars have hundreds of players online killing each other. And well, let's not even discuss Jita LOL.

I was actually just discussing this with my API / Algorithms teacher the other day. You'd have to bring into view anyone that has an effect on players near you like to a degree. I was talking about doing this for TDU so you never had to leave the server it just would pop others in. Like being in multiple servers at once or (cells)

As for your WoW with guys, the physics to make a real fps would make that near impossible WoW already makes people lag and not move and stuff while > 50 people are in one area.

Once again, it's not about "on at one time" as it is "online and interacting with each other at one time". You don't see 20k people in a single area in EVE. However, the basic idea here is effectively the same.

Wasn't there once an MMO called Planetside that was an FPS and must have done this before? What with a subscription max of about 75,000 and all... Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what they're doing here?

Anyone that has played a real-time FPS on the net will tell you this is a big deal.Heck,I play a 8 yr old FPS that will run easily on a 9600GT/core2duo,but as soon as you start playing against someone from across the globe-it lags the game play.And that is with 64 people max.It is all about speed and latency for the whole server.When 64 players with up to 5,000 miles apart can all get pings around 100 I will be one happy camper!
