Help Recommend an Online Web Host - PLEASE

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
I posted a similar thread in the server section, but that was under specialty builds and I figured it would also be good to post this here as it might be more appropriate.

I am looking to build a website (re-build actually) and I was curious what server/host you guys would recommend to me to host the website (Looking to go with an online company).

The information:

Will need to handle 10,000 visits a month at minimal. I would like the system to be able to handle 100,000 visits a month for growth potential.

Other things that the website will have:

* Community Calender
* Blog
* Geo Advertising
* User Accounts
* Ability to pull User Account info to send emails or mail to.
* Regular Advertisements
* Potentially a forum
* Social Networking Implementations
* RSS feeds
* Directory
* Want to make it easy for the Admin to add or edit articles
* Shopping Cart
* Intuitive Development tools
* PHP support

So if any of those things can be helped with the server selection then great. Essentially I don't want to have to create the code for a forum, community calender, or have to do my own full fleshed out database.

And I want to make it easy for the people who will be using this and posting articles or updates (I hear things about Ruby on Rails and such, but I have never used Ruby, etc.).

I am willing to learn some different stuff and will have 5-6 months to complete the site. But, again, if the website host can provide decent tools or functions for me to integrate in the website then that is all the much easier.

Thanks.

Even though I never really used them to their full potential I had a great experience with 1&1.

I've been using Webhostingpad for quite a while now and they've been pretty good. Worth checking out, anyway.

The top three that I found were the first three I mentioned above. I don't think you can get dedicated hosting for $20 a month and still get all the features these guys have.

BlueHost
HostMonster
WebHostingPad

Anyone else have any educated answers?

I would highly recommend knownhost.com. I have used one of their virtual dedicated hosting plans for years now and always had good service. Have recommended them for some of the shared plans also and they have been good. The virtual dedicated will scale with your site as it grows also without downtime. A nice feature.

They are good enough that I pretty much recommend all my clients use them if I am not hosting them on my server account.

They have really good support on the virtual dedicated side, have not dealt directly myself on shared hosting but I would imagine much of the same. They don't seem to oversell their systems either which bluehost/hostmonster ( same company ) do.

Bluehost/hostmonster do have good offerings and you could do worse. I have had a whole server that one of my sites was hosted on go down there though and they did not have any backups of the server to revert to, which could be disastrous if you don't have your own backups. They will not be able to handle your site as you grow though and you have no other options except picking up and moving to a new host which can be a major chore.

I will have to check these guys out and there respective pricing. Thanks!
