What Processor

post #1 of 17

Ok Guys/Girls

Lets put this one to bed....

I am currently upgrading my system, now all I need now is a mobo/proc and mem.

Now, I will mainly use the rig for gaming, and the odd video editing of a 15 minute video of my daughters latest school play

Now do I go for:

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz
Asus P8P67 PRO Intel P67
G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz

Price = £500

or

Mobo and Ram as above with:
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz

Price = £422

or

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz
Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX
G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Price= £408

Now lets get back down to earth before you comment and think of real word situations, I don't care if its not the fastest system out there, I just want something quick that is not being overpowered by my Radeon HD 6870 on my current x2 system. Will I realy notice a difference between the i7/i5 and the x6 playing BFBC2, or Crysis 2 etc? Is it worth the extra £90? For that I can get me a set of Logitech G35's

I will want the system to last me for a good 3 - 4 years btw

Please help me out with this one people, as it doing my head in!!

For gaming definitely 2500k and not 2600k.
Further more sandy bridge will out perform anything AMD has to offer at the same price.

I would go with the Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz. The Intel Core i7-2600K would just be over kill imo. The i5 can run any game you throw at it + future games with out a problem.

Another thing to consider. AMD's new processors will be compatable with the AM3 mobos. So if you get the AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T and the Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX you wont need a new mobo to upgrade to the new chips.

Intel is doing another die shrink so next year you will need a completley new mobo/cpu if you want to get the new chip. I know you said 3-4 years but sometime you just get that itch to upgrade

Just something to consider.

Nevermind, build a 1366 rig now, when SB gives you better performance for the same or less price is insane.

Terrible advice. The B3 boards are available now, there is no reason to build a 1366 system for gaming.

For gaming a 2500K is all you need. If you never plan to run 2 video cards save some money and go with an ASUS P8P67 (not the Pro). Put what you saved from the CPU and mobo into a better video card.

Did you read the complete advice? I'm saying that build a 1366 rig isn't good at this time.
