[Yahoo!]Forecast For Best Buy: Worst Is Yet to Come - Page 10

The only thing keeping them afloat is the exact same that kept Circuit City alive as long as they did: services. Not the extended warranties on crap, but service departments, Geek Squad. The reason most people think the GS are idiots is because, in general, they never meet the actual techs, just what we called "Counter Ops" which is a nice way of saying "secratery". These people did our paperwork, did check in/check out of units, and so forth, but you could train the dumb blonde from customer service to do it just as easily as anyone else. That or their local stores just flat sucked. My store when I was in Geeksquad we had a 9-member team, 4 of which were OCN level, myself included. 2 of them were flat not tech people. the other 2 were supervisors who knew a good bit but not enough to be just techs. They were there as admins only really.

Can anyone name ONE thing you can get at Best Buy vs Anywhere else, that would be considered a Best Buy?

Since Best Buy can't live up to their store name, it's obvious they're having problems.

I can't remember the last time I shopped for anything there...

Also, has anyone here heard of the Radeon 6770?

It's a renamed 5770 card to be used in pre-built systems @ Best Buy.

It's hard to compete because they sell high priced inferior computers.

Thats pretty sad because I always talk to the actual geeksquad techs when I go into bestbuy and they are severely under trained or could be due to poor operating procedures in place by bestbuy. I worked for circuit city and Ran the whole firedog team with a few techs under me. Our store was always the top in service for our region every month in our meetings mainly because I said screw there operating procedures and did things my own way.

While in the past, i've kept this to myself, i think it needs to be mentioned about best buy's policies on PC parts.

they usually can exchange them in store if you bought them there.

Last week, i had an 8800GT from BFG that went to GPU heaven. Took it in, exchanged it for a new card that was better. had i bought it from newegg, i would have been out the $150 i paid for that card, which was i think $20 more than newegg.

now, i cant see paying double for a card, but if the price is even close, i will take best buy over newegg 100% of the time for this reason.

I'm fairly sure Best Buy aren't helping competition any apart from companies looking at them like "That's how NOT to do it."

I used to go to Best Buy all the time years ago. Now I really never set foot in one unless I am really bored to browse TVs or something. Their prices are usually way higher than online. I think Best Buy really got a bad name for charging ridiculous markups for things like various cables. I mean, $90 for an HDMI cable. Really? Same cable online that does the same thing: $10.

When it comes to buying components for my rig I prefer going to a physical store. It just makes everything easier. You can see how something looks in RL, have easier returns, can ask questions and hope to get knowledgeable answers. But it's hard when you go into BB and get horrible staff and a horrible selection.

That's why Microcenter get's most of my business. You can actually talk to the employees and be confident that they have half a brain in their head unlike the staff at BB who seem to only know how to direct you towards $200 HDMI cords.
