Water cooling!!!

Thread Starter
Guys,

I'm in the process of buying/selecting components for water cooling my two 4870x2 in quadfire.

What sort of water flow rate should I be planning for? It's just for the GPU as the CPU is cooled by a Corsair H50. They are heat monsters!

Also, the pumps I have in mind are 1/2 ID but the waterblocks and radiators all seem to be 1/4 ID. If I'm using 1/2 ID pipe will the flow suffer and bottleneck?
I'm planning to use a triple rad, is this too much?

Lastly, is barbs or compression fittings best?

Thanks!

Jeff

Compression fittings are better but the get expensive real quick. Personally i think you should get some better video cards before you go dumping money into blocks to cool those 4870s. You could get a 6950 for less than that water cooling setup and you would get better performance that you would with those two 4870s xfired and OC'd

I have to agree with Zaiger.

Thanks Zaiger, that is a option I have been considering, I do like the look of the 6970 but will also want to water cool that so budget wise I may have to re-think.

Interestingly once you've turned up the volume so you can't hear the 747 fans on the 4870x2 the performance is good. All games are still normally in full settings in 1920x1080 but your point is very valid and much welcomed! Would be nice to have the option of eyefinity and DX11
Other problem is that if I go to 6970 I will want to replace the MB....the rampage 2 extreme doesn't have enough space to run two cards in x16, which i will want to do eventually if I buy a second 6970. So i best rob a bank! is there a newbie guide for that?!
Thanks!

Even at that you would still be ahead by not WCing those cards. AM3 mobos are cheap right now. I used to have 4870s if you can fit those in your rig you can probably fit two 6970s

Thats hother reason for going to water, the gap between the two 4870's is very slight and the top card runs at +15 degrees than the bottom.
The bottom PCIE slot can only run in x8 or x1 so that's not a option.

Will have a re-think on cards....if I was too go to 6970 in x-fire what water rate will I need to consider?

Well you should get that gear first and check it out. Right now i have my 6970s OC's and the temp has never been an issue.I have also read that those pci speeds really have no effect on FPS
What exactly are you tring to accomplish here?

Rampage 2 is fine. It runs x16, x8, x8 which is more than enough. The spacing on the slots is fine too, especially if yer gonna WC, spacing is less of an issue anyways.

6970 WC'd in trifire, you'll want a 480 rad or a 360 + 120 or 240 rad.

That's a good question!

1) reduce noise levels considerably, we've just moved and I've lost my game room

2)not have to go into settings in any games and reduce the experience because my PC can't walk-the-walk

3)Improve the life of my setup by giving it decent cooling

You must live somewhere cold cuz cfx 6950s and trifire on air for me was !@#$%ing hot.
