If you have the copyright to something, that makes it your property. If you acquire said property without permission, it can fall into the category of 'theft', although the polite term is infringement.

I don't believe a pirated copy = a lost sale, but some of these arguments are so incredibly short sighted and misdirected.

How so? The gaming industry (for PC usage) fundamentally sells CD keys that give you rights to use the said product. If one company has 2 keys and they are both being used, then you are using their product and running on their servers.

So, 2 X are playing on the server, but the company only received 1 X worth of sales. The company is at a loss.

The majority of pirated content is only acquired due to it's lack of price.

Also, please list a game in the past 5 years other than GRID or Sins of a Solar Empire where you did not have to have a unique retail CD key to play online.

That's the big question: how many people would have bought it if they couldn't pirate it? It's hard to believe that people with 1k+ gaming computers they upgrade every year or so can't afford or wouldn't pay for a 60 dollar game....

Do you realize how small of a percentage of all people spend $1k+ on gaming computers? There are MANY MANY more people who buy $300-400 computers. Many pirate a game, realize it doesn't run on their system and delete it right then and there. Yet, in the eyes of the corporations, they still "stole" the game even though they played it once and never again

Nothing of the sort is implied. The game code or keys themselves are not a limited resource.

It can only be a lost sale if the absence of piracy would directly result in more sales. The majority of pirates would either pirate/buy something else, or go without, if piracy of a particular title was not possible.

I'm not saying piracy isn't responsible for some loss, but a 1:1 ratio of pirated copies to lost sales is so completely absurd it defies imagining. I firmly believe, based on historical statistics, comparisons with other platforms, and personal experience, that the ratio is more like 10-50 pirated copies = one lost sale.

How is it hard to believe?

I spend 3-4k a year on PC hardware.

I buy maybe one new game a year, if that. I don't pirate games, outside of abandonware, either.

Very, very few games are worth the price companies try to charge for them while they are new. I will not pay 60 dollars for a game, nor would I if I was a billionaire. I will wait a year and pick it up for 20.

I have dozens of enjoyable games already that are far from over played. There is no incentive for me to drop stupid amounts of cash on a new game when chances are I've got 10 old ones in the same genre that are significantly more fun.

Only the greatest of games (in my opinion of greatness) can spur me to spend more than 30 dollars at a time on one.

These are the PC games I'm playing right now (as in have fired up in the past month), along their release dates:

BG2 (2000)
Mechwarrior 2 (1995)
Myth (1997)
Deus Ex (1999)
Crysis (2007)
Morrowind (2002)
BF1942 (2002)
VtM - Bloodlines (2004)

Only one on the lists I spend more than 30 dollars on were BG2 (which I've bought three times over the years) and Mechwarrior 2 which I bought on release for 50 bucks in 1995.
