Bad mistake!

Thread Starter
After I changed 2 optical drives in the computer the machine was started and little did I know one of the molex connecters was stopping my CPU fan. The machine shutdown and then restarted on it's own then shutdown again. then I noticed the plug inside of the Mascool fan. The HS was real hot. Took the HS out and the Athlon 754 processor cleaned it and didn't notice any burns on or under.Reassemled and didn't plug in the CPU fan. Hey I was flustered.Nothing heated up though it wasn't running more than 30 seconds.
Anyway squared that up and restarted and it runs.
The question is did I degrade the CPU? The motherboard is a GA-K8U Triton. I don't even know wether the board shut the machine down or the CPU. I didn't notice anything in the bios about core temp shutdown.
Any comments appreciated.

Did you touch the HS right after? If your fingers did not burn, no damage has been done.

I doubt such a short time would damage it at all.

Try running the PC, see if it boots up.

Chances are the life span has not been greatly affected at all. The computer will shut off before it reaches critical.

CPU's are extremely hard to kill. I wouldn't worry about it.

Agreed!

Remembering back to my first build (AMD Thunderbird!) accidentally put the heatsink on backwards, and the CPU was reading 120c in the BIOS LOL!

system lived for another 2 years after that before I upgraded

What heatsink do you have? If it's a stock one it most likely got pretty hot... If it's aftermarket like mine I can run mine with no fan at stock speeds and keeps pretty cool.

Wow thanks for all the replies
I did touch HS but it wasn't like a hot iron that you couldn't keep your fingers on, but it was very hot.
The system doe run W/O any hicups so far.
The main question is the CPU degraded? I wanted to sell this to someone. Thanks

BTW the heatsink is aftermarket lots of copper. 3" X3" of copper fins.
