Do I need a more powerful power supply?

Thread Starter
I had recently gotten a Xion 90+ Gold Series 700W power supply and I plan on doing some overclocking. I have an i7 920 I want to overclock to about 3.8Ghz, Crossfire 5870's that are running at 900mhz GPU clock and 1300mhz Memory clock. I also am going to watercool my system with 2 loops, 1 loop with dual 140mm's for the video cards and another dual 140mm loop for the processor and north bridge. Also I am going to either overclock my ram to 1600mhz or leave them at 1333mhz I do not know. Would you recommend upgrading to a 850w? Such as the KINGWIN LZG-850 Gold? I could still get my money back for my current power supply saying that it wasn't powerful enough for my system or something like that.

Motherboard: Asus Rampage ii Extreme

I plan on upgrading to the Asus Rampage iii Formula or go to the Sandy Bridge that use less power but are just as good if not better than the i7 920's. What would you do? I am not a huge techie guy but I know for the most part what I'm talking about.

I'm not an expert with power supplies, but you'd definitely be cutting it close. And personally, I wouldn't trust that power supply handling expensive hardware like that. Be safe and get a reliable power supply.

This is complete speculation but the internal layout you can see from the back of the Xion looks exactly like the NZXT Hale 80+ Gold units and Kingwin Lazer 80+ Gold units. My educated guess would be that the Xion uses the same platform, made by SuperFlower, which is actually pretty good. The Xion does look like (at least in the Newegg pix) to be using a different brand of caps which probably aren't as good.

It will probably run the system fine, but personally I would probably go ahead and return it and get something with a little more power. Redlining a PSU will decrease its lifespan so its better to have a bit more than is necessary.

That's assuming you can easily return the Xion. If you can't then it might be worth giving it a try, and then only try returning it if you have instability problems.

I would suggest going with a higher wattage PSU, too. It's close, but I try to never work a PSU beyond 85% (mine is currently around 65% absolute worst case scenario...see my sig).

Alright well I am returning the Xion for full price through Amazon.com. I ordered the LZG-850 from Kingwin. Right now my 700w handles the system no problem...I just want to overclock a bit.

Actually, it's a pretty good Superflower GoldenGreen unit. Just because it doesn't say Corsair on the label that doesn't mean it isn't good.

You shouldn't have returned it... 700w is more than enough for an overclocked Core i7/5870 CF rig. Next time, you should probably wait for someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

You should fill the signature formula for your system, so we know exactly what hardware you got. As not only GPU, CPU and MB draws power.

That's pretty much all you need to make a guess, though.
