E8400 help

Hello, I'm new to overclocking and I have been working on my e8400.. im trying to get it as high as i can but i can't seem to get past 3.8.. and even at 3.8 i feel like i had to bump my voltages quite a bit to achieve 3.8.. right now i have my vcore set at 1.36 in the bios but cpu z is reading 1.336 idle and while under load it goes down to 1.280 and my NB set at 1.4.. i know that my processor isn't that great for overclocking because its a c0 stepping but do these voltages sound high for 24/7 use?

Its safe to go to 1.4v as long as temps dont go over 74*c . 1.4v will get you a 4ghz overclock, maybe a bit higher. The key though to unlocking the E8400s overclocking potential is the gtl ref lanes if your board has the option, research on them and set them right and it will alow for much higher clock speeds. I got my E8400 to 5.2ghz and im pretty sure it was a CO stepping chip

wow thats pretty high. 5.2ghz.. my motherboard does have cpu gtl ref and nb gtl voltages.. i tried putting my vcore to 1.4 just to see if i could get 4ghz to boot and it did although it froze instantly when i tried running IBT.. When you say its safe up to 1.4 volts does that mean 1.4 in cpuz idle or after vdroop? underload?

what mobo are you using? as this can have a big impact.
i used to have an old g41 mobo and with my q6600 all i could get to was 2.8GHz.
then i bought a proper p45 mobo and i got it easily to 3.3GHz and haven't even tried going higher.
the difference between 3.6 to 3.8 is only about 2-3fps, is it really worth it?

this comp is kinda old now so i thought i would practice some overclocking on this before i built a new comp.. im using an asus p5kc... i have seen some posts where people reach 4ghz which much less volts then i need for 3.8.. i know every cpu is diffrent but i feel like this is a bit much just for 3.8

the asus p5kc is a p35 mobo, so that is good for overclocking.
tbh is wouldnt raise the vcore any higher,
looking here intel recommend a highest of 1.3625
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33910

also is your ram unlinked at stock speed? as if not, this can stop the oc.
unlink ram and leave at stock speeds
as 4.0ghz is 444 x 9 if your ram is too slow it might not go that high

also Kunkka.
go to user cp at top of page and fill in your system details, so people can see the specs of your pc

my ram is rated for 1600mhz so i set my bios to the manufacture specs, right now its running below 1600mhz so i dont think its my ram.. is there anything i could do to lower my vcore a bit since im pretty close to the max? should i raise my NB more? or will gtl ref help me gain more stability and lower vcore? ill fill out my system details so you can get a better idea of what i have.. thanks for the quick replys btw.

After reading a few posts it seems that i shouldn't need to raise my FSB Termination voltage or vtt for such a low FSB (423).. however if i lower this to stock then i fail IBT in a few minutes.. does anyone know if running 1.3v in my asus p5kc for 24/7 use will cause any harm to my proc? I tried to lower my vtt back to stock and i bumped my vcore 1 notch but i still failed.. anyone have any advice?
