Chipp needs a new (little) rig

...about time I had another one of these threads, eh? biggrin.gif

I've done about two years now of using my laptop as my primary computer, and I've been overall really happy. However, my needs have changed a little bit, and I'm now looking to replace my semi-powerful laptop with a reasonably powered desktop and a netbook for on the go.

I am still living in cramped quarters, though, so I'm looking at either a miniscule mATX build, or preferably an ITX form factor. Just quickly throwing some parts together this afternoon, I ended up with something like this:

Antec ISK-300 Case

ECS H55-I s1156 Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135259

2x2gb G.Skill DDR3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

Intel Core i3-560
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115068

OCZ Vertex 2
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227550

This is (obviously) not a heavy duty gaming rig. I mostly use my computer for music production, coding and running VMs, typical internet/office stuff, and on occasion some games (most recently LoL, but I plan to play BF3 and ME:3, too). The question here is... how well will the on-chip graphics fare for my needs? I do have a Radeon 3850 doing little in my Dad's computer, so I could possibly replace it for him with something less hot/loud and use the 3850 in the new build - I don't think I'll get a dual slot GPU in most ITX cases that are as small as I'd like. Also, I won't pretend to be up to date on anything - the last time I was researching hardware, the Q6600 was king of everything. redface.gif If I'm missing some crazy new thing that is coming around the corner in a week, let me know please!

Comments on any of the above?

TL;DR - Chipp needs a new rig, wants mITX mATX w/ onboard GPU for sub-$500, and wants it tiny.

UPADTE: New mock is posted later on in the thread.

Looks good. What video card are you going for?

Them hexacores are preety popular nowadays (at least for AMD users).

If you plan to play BF3, You will need more horsepower than the i3..
Perhaps a new i5 2500, Or 2500k?

Also you will probably need more gpu horsepower.. I'd wait till the game comes out tho tbh.. Cards will be cheaper, and we will know more about how much power the game will need.

Everytime I hear BF3, I just start to have an epilepsy biggrin.gif.

I'm cross-firing for that game smile.gif.

Are you in a rush to get it? I'd wait for Sandy Bridge to be readily available in a mITX platform.

Is 60gb enough for you? I'd go with a conventional hard drive despite the speed loss. 60GB isn't much to work with VMs.

Meh, as you said its no heavy duty rig, so for Graphics you may want to buy a GTS450/250

Not in any real hurry, no - I figure I'd be making a move on buying parts in about a month, maybe a little longer if there was something worth waiting for. As far as Sandy Bridge goes... anybody have a good link for me to get some reading done on the differences between SB and Clarkdale? I had assumed it was a smaller manufacturing process, but both seem to be 32nm and have similar specs from my initial reading (with a small drop in TDP with the newer core, which admittedly could be nice in super-tiny PSU and case world)

I guess I should have expanded here. smile.gif I'm sticking with boards that have eSATA, I've got my old workhorse WD 640gb AAKS in an external enclosure that I'll be using to supplement the internal storage.
