Looking for a SSD boot drive

Thread Starter
I'm planning a sandy bridge rig. I want set up a SSD as a boot drive and then have a spinpoint F3 for everything else. I don't know enough about SSDs, so I do not know what to get. Suggestions?

Are SSD's plug and play, or do I have to tweak them to use them as a boot drive and a regular hd for storage?

Usually I'd recommend the C300 for its 60k IOPS, but right now I recommend waiting for the C400.

SSDs are usually plug and play. The OS automatically downloads the proper drives and enables TRIM. However, there are several "tweaks" you can do to increase the lifespan of the drive. You can read up on those here.

Only 4K IOPS random read. The higher the IOPS, the more responsive the drive.

As I've said before:

Sandforce 1200 Controller:
(285MBps Seq. Read/275MBps Seq. Write/50K IOPS in Random 4K Read)
  • OCZ Vertex 2
  • Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe
  • Corsair Force Series
  • G.Skill Phoenix Pro Series.
  • A-DATA S599

Crucial Controller:
(355MBps [SATA III] or 265MBps [SATA II] Seq. Read/75MBps Seq. Write/60K IOPS in Random 4K Read)
  • Crucial RealSSD C300

Crucial drives are better for an OS (faster random reads) while Sandforce drives are better if you are going to be transferring data (faster seq. write). If you decide to go with Sandforce, stick with the drives on my list. Other Sandforce drives, even if they are Sandforce 1200 drives, dont operate at 50K IOPS (ie. OCZ Agility 2, Patriot Inferno).
