Cell Phone/Service...NEED INPUT!

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy a new phone.
Ive been using a crummy(junk) prepaid cellphone(decent service though) for the past few months and I just got a really good new job so im looking to get a real phone.

I live in Tucson Arizona, and my job is one where email/web MAY be useful from time to time but probably wont be needed. I dont need (or want) an Andriod phone and a Blackberry is pushing it.
I need it to call, text, and take semi-passable pics and seeing as I was an idiot right after I turned 18 I need it to be available for pre-paid plans.

I REALLY want another Razr V3 very badly seeing as my old one was so good to me and looked fantastic. If someone can find one that meets my needs and is offered on a pre-paid plan I will be VERY greatful.

Also, Suggestions for carriers with decent pre-paid options would be appreciated.

Im just getting back into looking at cell phones, so im not really sure where to look.

EDIT: Thanks to mbudden Im adding info.

No more than $60 a month for service (~300 Minutes is perfect and the more texting the better)
I don't want to spend more than $100 on the phone its self. Ill stretch to $120.

Amazing question...Im ashamed that I didn't think of that.
Ill Edit the OP for that.

Preferably no more than $60 a month for service and no more than $100 for the phone.
Ill swing $120 if its worth it.

You should check out Virgin Mobile's plans, they are really amazing. They have two Android phones (Intercept and Optimus V) you can choose from ($149 and $199 retail, both can be rooted and used for Wifi tethering and all other Android goodness). The best part is the monthly cost.

In all the plans you get unlimited messaging and data. It's $25 a month for 300 mins, $40 a month for 1200 mins, and $60 a month for unlimited. I have the Intercept and have the $25 a month plan, great coverage in my area (it follows Sprint's network), very reliable, and I love the monthly cost with no contract required! And when you purchase the phone you don't even have to lock in for a period of time, unlike every other major carrier out there.

edit: if 300 mins is enough for you, there is really no better plan out there. If Sprint has good coverage in your area, it's really a no brainer. If you decide to go with it, PM me and I'll give you a "kickback" code, kind of like a referral thing where we both get money credited to our account!

Ill definitely think about it more. And I will PM you if I decide on Virgin Mobile.
Im aware of that deal and its VERY interesting. I just dont need an android phone of any type. All the phones Virgin Mobile seem to offer are crazy flashy.
Does/Did Virgin Mobile offer a basic phone? Could I buy a Razr V3 and get that plan? If I have to ill grab that Blackberry. $200 is really steep for my sensibilities...but Ill do it because I HATE touchscreens. And I love a good blackberry.

The Intercept has a full qwerty keyboard, which you can use to navigate everything if you so wanted. The Optimus V is full touch screen, so you probably won't want to go that route. I didn't really like touch screens, but the Intercept is pretty awesome. There is a modding community over at sdx forums where people develop stuff. If you want to get a Blackberry it is an extra $10 a month added on to the plan.

$200 isn't really that steep... Think about it like this. With any other phone carrier, when you buy the phone for a good price (let's say $100), you're going to be locked into contract for 1 - 2 years. If you want to annul that, you'll pay a pretty penny. I would guess a typical plan with unlimited data, unlimited messaging, and 300 minutes is at least $40 - $50+ (tbh probably a lot more for unlimited data, but whatever). The first year you would be looking at $100 + $480 in monthly costs (at the absolute minimum for a plan that matches VM) = $580. On VM, it would only be $200 + $300 in monthly costs = $500. Plus you get the added benefit of being able to stop service without paying a fee unlike on any other major carrier.

Android isn't intimidating. I don't think of it as incredibly flashy either. You can use it for simple tasks, just like browse the web, check email (any email or Gmail integration is awesome) and do anything else that the other phones could do. To my knowledge you can't use a good Razr on VM, because you have to get the phone from them. You can't use an unlocked one or anything. They sold a Razr many many years ago but it's probably hard to find and not good in today's phone standards.

Keep in mind the Optimus V has no keyboard You're still going to go through with it?

Also I'm not familiar with a ton of carriers, is there anything remotely close to $25 a month with 300 mins and unlimited everything else?

Not that ive seen. Virgin Mobile has the best plan im aware of.

And im tempted to just pay the extra $10 a month and get the blackberry.
I probably will.
$35 a month for a phone that cost $200 but meets all of my needs, doesn't blow them away, and has real buttons is a small price to pay.
