Burning smell coming from PC - Page 2

Thanks all for the replies. System info is in my sig now (that's an awesome new feature btw). Still needs to be tweaked a little (at work so don't have full specs) but them's the basics.

I will be popping the psu open next (very carefully) and checking for bugs. Will also doublecheck voltage coming out of the wall/UPS and see if that's a contributing factor. Will keep you all posted.

I had a smell coming from my rig, I just opened it up and started sniffing around, kind of like a hound dog,lol
Anyway it only took a couple seconds to find the source, and it was the PSU on my rig, burnt out.
So just give it the old hound dog sniff test!! lol, You should be able too find it. I hope!!

This is what I'm trying to tell him.

People keep saying to get his PSU open, but it's much simpler than that. It can be something else smelling like that. For example my brother's situation, where the NB was the smelly component

This happened to me 3 days ago, found my 24 pin burnt to a crisp on the mobo and PSU side.

I would do a thorough cleaning and if it persists, focus on power supply first.

do you have the additional molex plugged into your board for pcie power? I'm pretty sure the extreme has it as my formula does.

Yes my mobo has 2 additional 4pin molex. But I do not use them. Should I use it?

Alright, so...

I've opened up the PC once again and this time pulled out the power supply to give it a closer look. Decided not to pop it all the way open (don't want to void my warranty if it turns out to be the culprit) but looked inside it as best as I could. Didn't spot anything burnt. Thought I noticed some weird stuff inside the PSU (white epoxy-like goop) but according to some pics of the insides I found, that stuff is normal. Hit it with the canned air, really good this time.

Also took the computer apart – everything out except for the MB/heatsink – and blew that out too – got as much dust out as I could. Didn’t see anything there either that looked black, burnt, or otherwise suspicious.

So for the moment, I'm stumped. Going to reassemble things, boot 'er up and see if I get the smell again, but if I still do I'm not sure where to go from there. Guess my next step will be a PSU tester to check my voltages, but beyond that...? We'll see.
