From what I have read and seen over countless threads on the 6990 on this site, 90% of those posts are from people COMPLETELY missing the point here.
Of course the 6990 is too expensive.
Its a niche product. A poster boy.

Its hot and real noisy too.
Many setups costing less are a better option.

Thats not the point.
AMD wants to be able to say they have the fastest available videocard on the market.
Its the Corvette in the middle of the showroom so you buy the Cavalier.

If you are aware of these issues do you think one would experience them with a 6990/6970 set up? Are video games even written to take advantage of 3 or even 4 GPU's?
You are mixing 2 things up here. Tri-Fire versus ''Quad''-Crossfire. 2X5970 was 4 GPUs on 2 cards, and it was problematic.

But 5970 + 5870 is Tri-Fire, 3 GPUs, and it's working like a charm for me. Rock-stable. Scaling is better then people think it is. I can't remember the last time I had a crash/bug/freeze/BSOD in the last 12 months with that set-up. Crossfire profiles coming out from AMD regularly are all working fine also with Tri-Fire. No problems on my side.

And don't forget those 3 GPUs are 24/7 at 1000/1200 since 12 months!

6xxx serie scaling is alot better then 5xxx. So Tri-Fire (6990+6970) should do pretty well, and spank 580 SLI easily. Same price, 2 cards against 2 cards. 3 GPUs against 2... for the same price.

Why do you think that all those 580 SLi owners are so agressive? 3 months after buying a 1000$ set-up, AMD spank them pretty hard. Lots of frustration and anger.

Agreed with everything he said lol I will also be going trifire with a 6990+6970 because my present trifire config has been great.

+1000 !

I'm trying to explain this all over the place but no one seems to understand. Well said. At least we are 2 grasping the idea behind the cards like the 6990 and 590. A new era of extreme GPUs has just begun! Throwing out every power specs out of the window, and going all out to win the first place!

People here are TOTALLY missing the point, reason, and for whom AMD designed the 6990. TOTALLY. Same thing with the nvidia 590.

To be fair, you make a good point. I hadn't considered the 6990+6970 option.

It is def going to be interesting once the GTX590 is out!

This is very frustrating poll (Keep it simple stupid - doesn't work here. It is more like It is simple, stupid).

I like it but not paying $650-700!

You have some valid points here mate. Bear in mind that when the 5870 came out, I went out and bought two 5870 XXX edition. Overall price? 1250 euros for both cards.

You know what the point is?

Let me tell you :

1. Multi monitor setup was giving flickering on all monitors.
2. Driver recovery errors in W7
3. CFX performance was all over the place. 150 FPS here, 20 FPS there.
4. Each new driver revision from AMD fixed something, broke something else.
5. ATI Stream had some issues too
6. Photoshop CS5 crashes when working on 2 GB Tiff files
7. VLC crashes when GPU decoding enabled in the options menu.

The list is long and distinguished. You can imagine that even now, my second I7 righ with CFX 5870 XXX cards has huge problems. Dirt 2 DX 11 performance is awesome. In some stages I have to disable CFX if I want decent gameplay. Dragon Age I have to force CFX with third party tools for it to work the way I want too. Mass Effect 2, AA needs to be forced and if you want CFX performance you need to change the CFX method.

Bottom line

People who buy this, will probably end up being guinea pigs because this is the AMD way. I was a guinea pig for 1 year and I still don't have a multi gpu setup worth the money I paid.

P.S: I am off the AMD wagon and will buy NVIDIA. Will shell out cash for Kepler without hesitation. TRI-SLI Kepler!

It's unbelievable. The benchmarks and performance figures produced for the 6990 (CrossfireX and without) for Metro 2033 and STALKER Call of Pripyat just blew me away at those resolutions and level of detail (graphic setting wise). They are definitely a priority upgrade for which funds will be allocated.

P.S: I am off the AMD wagon and will buy NVIDIA. Will shell out cash for Kepler without hesitation. TRI-SLI Kepler!
Early adopters of anything (Sandy Bridge, artificial food addititves, low-flush toilets, toys, cell phones..etc) are always guinea pigs. Your P.S. statement basically says you want to guinea pig for Kepler too.
