With full pcie 16 lanes on both pcie slots, these dual gpus are a waste.

I understand there's a market for Lambos, Ferraris, but I wouldn't blow my money on these types of cards. Much better for your system to tri or quad 6970 cards.

I like the performance since they scale so well, they force nVidia to go all out against this monster to gain the crown. nVidia will need either really good scaling or decent clocks (600MHz is not going to cut it).

The dislikes are a lot though:

- $699
- it beats a vacuum cleaner in terms of noise (6990, vacuum cleaner)
- It runs really hot without too big of an OC (94*C)
- It might kill my PCI-e slot either by pulling too much current through it or molesting it with its massive weight
- 6990 in CF are only a little bit faster than GTX 580 in SLI and sometimes get pounded by them. (kind of defeats its purpose)

And IMO it's really ugly and too long.

I was hoping the 6990s would be pretty sweet but it ends up being disappointing. I think they tried to go too far with one card. I've read most of the 6990 reviews with some cliff notes:

Expensive, hot (some reviews the 6990 actually shut down the computer from overheating), incredibly loud, microstutter noted, poor 2x 6990 scaling (quad-fire) in many titles.

Basically you are better off in virtually every way if you opt for traditional single GPU card X-Fire/SLI setups. Pretty much what I expected. One review had the 6990 noise level twice that of GTX580 SLI setup. Thats just lol.

One of my favorite review quotes: "In order to keep the card at 90 degrees or less, the fan then speeds up to 3600 RPM, or what I call Charlie Sheen F-18 mode."

As long as all the people complaining about power consumption, heat, and price all come back when the 590 is released to complain... I'm cool.

Not sure what exactly people were expecting here. SLI/xFire is nearly always better. For a dual GPU monster, AMD did well.

Though, I will say they should of priced it about $50 cheaper...

I'm going to laugh if the price drops below that of the 580's. Then who has the last laugh Nvidia?!

If Nvidia doesn't drop the ball on the 590 they definitely got me, seems ATI didn't do so hot this time finding more benchmarks to quell my queries on 6990 CF... pretty terrible >_<

Though price wise I'm still going to hate to see 590 if its following any trend of the 6970 vs 6990 prices...

Anyone know a benchmark that compares a 6970CF to 6990? since its basically same price.

Or actually cheaper for dual unlocked 6950's I think.

people r complaining mainly cuz of its power consumption, noise and price......

well a single 6970 consumes around 250 watts and in cfx its around 500 which is more than a 6990

one 6970 costs around 340$ and 2 of them costs around 680$...so 20$ extra is not much when u can afford 2 6970s...

noise.....who really cares wen u r gaming with hifi sound systems around u

if 6990s power consumption heat and noise is too much to handle just think what will be a GTX590 sound like......let me guess.......a CONCORDE?

Anands review had 6990 vs 6970CF and 6950CF, pretty much a little better than 6950CF on average, but sometimes a bit slower, they guess PCI-E bandwidth starved.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4209/a...le-card-king/2

For me, I like it, AMD are pushing the envelope and that is still cool, even though game developers dont follow it up.
