You will face same problems with Nvida and since you waited this long this is probably the worst generation to upgrade because 4870X2 - 6990 its still 40nm so you get more heat, power. Save your money.

No. Nvidia does not DISABLE your secondary GPU with their drivers like AMD did for 4 driver updates because of their craptastic PowerPlay garbage. Hell, people still have problems like me and have to stay with drivers back from July of last year.
The fact you even said "You will face the same problems with Nvidia" without knowing what problems I was referring to makes me wonder.

Heat and power doesn't really concern me as far as performance goes. I have a 1kw PSU, it can take it. I also plan to watercool whichever card I get.

tbh your in the world of dual GPU... its more temperamental so you should expect issues, and i dont think either Brand will get rid of all the issues anytime soon, its the nature of dual GPU, just as im sure there are issues with the SLI and Xfire guys.

besides were overclockers- take it like a man and tweak the **** out of it

Took me 5 minutes to flash my BIOS on my 5970 and solve all the powerplay, and other ''problems'', that card had.

Working flawlessly since 1 year and 4 months already in Tri-Fire (yes Tri- with a 5870) without a single crash/bug/freeze/BSOD. Working like a charm for me.

Not flashing your BIOS is true PEBKAC IMHO on an EXTREME forum. Flashing a GPU BIOS is just like flasing the BIOS of your motherboard, and then OCing your CPU. Easy to do. Same thing IMHO.

And AMD totally know we are doing it! That's why there is 2 BIOS on the 6990 and 6970. They want us to do it!

Both of you are right but in this guy's defense... If I just go to nvidia's dual gpu and not have to put up with it.. it just works with a couple updates, I would rather do that instead.

ATi has always had the worst driver problems, that's a fact. Sure so does nVidia, but in my experiences those issues were usually resolved with waiting for a new driver or trying out some older ones. Anytime I had an ATi driver issue it either took several months to fix or I threw my hands in the air and said I had enough

I'd take blue-screens while overclocking over a bricked card any day. This is not fact, nor could you claim which side has had the worst driver experiences. The ONLY driver problems I've had with ATI have been due to the catalyst control center. And that was only with uninstalling my video drivers that would somehow cause conflict with my raid array.

Performance decrease is not a driver problem. It is a coding problem. The drivers work fine. And since the HD2000 series, I have no heard of any "problems" in drivers being the route cause of the issue. Most users on here use driver cleaner, which fundamentally can corrupt the entire windows registry. I have heard of the opposite with Nvidia; bricked cards.

User problems != driver problems.

Charging over double the cost of the 6970 for the 6990 is foolish. Those with 6970s should just add another, and those looking to upgrade should just buy 2 6970s. I will never understand this pricing decision.
