Carvin EM 900 IEM review / rant

Thread Starter
I thought I'd post this since there really isn't enough reviews or what not on this product.

I recently got my hands on a Carvin EM 900 IEM system.
http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/single.php?product=EM900

Some info about me:
I use to do studio recording, and work part-time as a live sound engineer.
I've worked in recording studios and studied audio engineering while in college.
I also play regularly in a band.

I do play a lot on stage and was in need of a IEM system for some application.
I've always been a believer in Shure and sennheiser products.
Extensively used Shure PSM 200, 400, 600, and 900 systems. Along with Sennheiser G2 and G3 IEMs.
So coming from a shure system I had high expectations.

so lets get the point.

PROS:
1) price of $361 shipped (you can get two of these systems for a good bit less than a psm 400)
2) Stereo mix / Mono mode
3) a lot of frequencies (custom sets and groups)
4) solid build. Metal and not cheap plastic
5) two AA batteries in cartridge pack
6) signal meter
7) battery meter
8) monitor mix at transmitter
9) great battery life
10) solid signal transmission
- i generally use IEMs in an environment where there are about 6 wireless mics, wifi, and other IEMs. With the shure systems, even with the legendary PSM 600's there was some interference and occasional drops for a second or two.

CONS:
1) Seems to be a bit of white noise at silences. more like white noise that's not coming from the board or in the system.
2) a little more interference around metal objects than i've experienced with other systems, not signal drops. i mean high frequency buzz, you can still clearly hear the signal.
3) earphones it comes with are not really favorable. After i swapped them out with some scl5's i was very pleased.
4) i still don't like how the antenna sticks up. i wish they would make it stick downwards.
5) i wish they would include rack ears instead of selling them separately.
6) I feel the system adds a reverb that's not there.

Overall:
i am please with the Carvin EM900's. Although some may claim they are a NADY make which i hate, but this performs way out of any of NADY's ball parks. I would still prefer to use the sennheiser G3 system or a psm 900 system. I would how ever prefer to use the carvin over the psm 200, 400, and Sennheiser G2's. As for the quality of the signal, it is clearly obvious that the quality is wireless. A psm 900 will win in a quality competition while i will say it is better than a psm 200 and comparable to a 400, and giving a 600 run for it's money. The summing op-amp is a little iffy. I would recommend you use it in stereo mode, as i think in mono mode there is more quality degradation.

Bottom line:
For the Price, and getting this performance is superb value. You can't get this performance at this price, anywhere. If this is in your budget i would recommend it.

I have always loved carvins price/performance. I have lots of there other PA gear and it all sounds really good for what I paid. There amps are great and practically indestructible. I have the buds this comes with there decent for the price they don't sound bad and have good isolation they work for the general use of the IEM system. Carvins products have always out performed Nady. Nadys wireless mics suck but carvins sound clean and can take abuse.
