Addition: Just looked at the i7 2600K and saw the Intel Turbo Boost 2.0, is that an OC software done from within Windows? If so, is it worth trying?
Sort of. I recommend viewing this link and then watching the demo via the link on that page.

On Topic: In C4D it`s called viewport but what i meant you have to setup the scene move the camera and stuff (i guess so).
With my realflow meshes i was unable to set up a scene until g-card update.
I don`t know about maya maybe you should do some research what card is required for maya (and 1mill polys). Could be maya is so well coded that a "good" card isn`t neccessary.
Edit: Seems like Raytracing loves RAM and Autodesk recomends some cards:

I was thinking before rigging the new system I was going to do some OC tests on this setup and get a feel of the changes and temperatures. If I burn it out it won't be such a tragedy.

The problem would be a different mobo&bios plus these new CPU`s aren`t overclocked by the FSB but by the multiplier. The difference is like submarine and aircraft

Well currently I'm not able to drive either, I'm sure if I knew how to drive a submarine I'd be somewhat more prepared to drive an airplane than now.

If the money is there, it may be well worth sticking with the Six Core setup, but a decently clocked i7 2600K can keep up to them, 6 Core still pulls ahead I believe, but enough of a price difference to make a large impact.

I think this setup is pretty excellent. The only suggestion would be to replace the RAM with these Corsair Dominators to have 1600mhz. For the water cooling I suspect I don't need to buy any extra water blocks or anything?

Gives you Six cores, More then enough RAM, and the cooler you want, with a decent mobo. Just for a bit over 1000$ (1013)

Bang for your buck GU processing power I'd say keep your eye open for a used 5870, I've seen the running around 165$ range sometimes!

So I finally went with the i7 2600k setup and OCed just using the multiplier. It is currently set at 45 and I have to say I am satisfied on keeping the system at 4.5GHz. Does anyone have any suggestions on setup to keep the system more stable in terms of temperatures. During intel burn I peaked to about 70C but settled by the end at about 68C. These are my BIOS overrides;

CPU Clock Ratio 45x
C1E - Disabled
EIST - Disabled
C3,C6 - Disabled
CPU Thermal Monitor - Disabled
