HD 5850 CF vs GTX 580

Thread Starter
My friend just bought 2 x HD 5850s for crossfire. He scored a deal on Tiger for 160$ a piece with a mail in rebate. His resolution will be 1920 x 1080 and he would like to max all games, just like everyone else. I think he should return them and pick up a single GTX 580 when the prices drop at the release of the GTX 590s(hopefully). His computer is strictly for gaming and single card set ups always work better for gaming.

Should I keep up the argument that 1 GTX 580 would benefit him more or am I just wasting my breath? proof.gif

Don't expect the 580 to drop in price and if it does don't expect it to be more than $20.

The 590 is not replacing or competing with the 580.

I disagree. If they price the 590 only a few hundred dollars above the 580 then why would anyone consider sli 580s when a 590 is just a few hundred dollars more? I think they have to lower the 580 price to atleast $400-$425 or make the 590 cost $800-900. Just my two cents.

Nothing wrong with 5850's in crossfire. Essentially equal to 5970 in power. He'll have no problem maxing every game at only 1920x1080. Sure the 580 may provide a better overall experience, but the difference would be negligible and not worth the cost, wait, and effort IMO.

Because it is highly likely that:

2x 580's will be faster than 1 590.

and folks with one 580 will probably buy a second one over a 590.

If he already has the 5850's then he should just stick with them and upgrade later down the road.

The only reason I asking because they are new and in the box. He could easily send them back to Tiger for a exchange.

Thanks for the input though.

No...

A 5970 would outhweigh 2x 5850's.

A 5970 are 2x 5870's with the same clock as the 5850.

More SP, more everything

Still, 2x 5850 is $320 and a GTX 580 is $500. I think the $180 he saved is worth keeping the 5850s.

i second this, the 5970 is 2 5870 chips at 5850 clocks. So there is a difference in performance can be caught if u oc the 5850s. The problem with the 5xxx series is scaling and micro stutter. This is present with the 5970, its still a dual gpus.
