eVGA X58 SLI3 vs ASUS P6X58D-E

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm building a new rig and I can't decide between these 2 boards,

Here's my plan so far:

Case: Silverstone Raven RV02-e
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 @ 4.0ghz 1.3vcore ish
CPU Cooler: Corsair H50 w/ 2 Aerocool Shark 120mm black (will use a Prolimatech Armageddon on the ASUS board, with blue led shark fans)
GPU: ASUS GTX 580 (SLI later on)

The main issue is, that while I vastly prefer the eVGA's looks, I'm somewhat hesitant about there only being one pci-e slot running at 16x.
How much would that affect SLI performance on the 580's?
Both boards have nearly identical SATA and USB support, though I'm not sure about overclocking potential on each board.

http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=gFBKfNyhppW9tDbB

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Djac.

weird...i thought that X58 chipsets support 32 pic lanes??

and the performance drop from x16 to x8 is about 5% to 15% and depends on what game and other variable it could be 1 frame or like 20fps drop.

what are you looking to spend on a board?? cause i mean the classified 3 or the Rampage iii are very stout mobos

8x vs 16x is miniscule in terms of performance.

Only looking to spend about 200ish euro's, so these 2 boards seem perfect, I did check out the Rampage III Formula, but I've been told that the P6X58D-e is alot better value.
I'm leaning towards the eVGA, because , in part, of the looks, but also because the 3rd pci-e slot isnt right on the edge of the board, as it is on the ASUS.
Though the ASUS board would let me install a soundcard above the 1st slot.

Thinking about doing a LED backglow on the motherboard, which would look awesome on the black eVGA

I have the Premium version of that Asus board, It's pretty killer, plus it matches my theme in looks.

Unless you truly plan to 3 Way Sli three GTX 580's which i doubt, it's really not worth it.

My board and my card are going to be watercooled when I have the time, SLi is great but, remember, it doesn't work on everything. (so a single powerful card is great.)

But you can't fault any of these boards in my opinion.
I will say if you're going to SLi, you're going to get more out of that Asus. x16/x16/x1

If you speak from experience then do share.

Out of all the EVGA boards I've used, not a single one has ever given me a hiccup.
