6990 vs 2 580's?

post #1 of 110
Thread Starter
looked at benches today and I thought i had my rig planned out which is as follows:

CPU = 2600k Sandy bridge
GPU = 2 GTX 580 SLI with possibly one of my old 260's for Physics?
Power supply = Corsair AX1200
Ram = Gskill ripjaws 1600 Mhz 8 gig 7-8-7-24
CPU cooler = either a RASA XPS kit or just a Corsair H70 (haven't decided)
Motherboard = Gigabyte UD7 (when the damn thing comes back in stock)

The Motherboard has been holding me up so now the 6990 has released and now i dunno what to do. I'm not a fan boy of either side but I am after the best overall product. example, i've heard ATI handles multi-monitor better than Nvidia and scales better when in crossfire, True? but after seeing the reviews of the 6990 it didn't really wow me with the performance but on the other hand i could just get one of these cards and save 300 dollars. obviously I know two 580's would out perform 1 6990 but by how much? If you know what your doing, are the ATI DRIVERS really that bad to deal with??? I want to build a really good machine that will last quite a while. I will go multimonitor eventually i have 2 need to get my third, but that will have to wait as this rig is very expensive... Opinions please? I'm not an expert on this subject so a little help is needed. thanks

2 full cards will always be faster than 2 neutered gpus on one pcb. 'Course 2 580s is more than a 6990... there's always the rub.

Stick with the 580's if you want to keep your sanity after installing drivers.

Get a 6990, GTX580 isn't the clear cut winner you think it is.

The 6990s GPUs haven't been neutered as far as I can tell, so there's no reason it would be slower/faster than 2 6970s.

That said.. 2 580s will likely win out, although Crossfire scaling has been top notch on the Southern Islands arch.

almighty15 - Then what am I missing here http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...6970-review/18 and here http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...6970-review/22 ? Not sure what "you think it is" but it seems like the 580 is superior to the 6970 GPU. SLI and Crossfire scale wonderfully, so if single card is any indication, seems likely 2 580s will beat one 6990.

They're underclocked, but even overclocked... that aside the 580s are faster.

The 580's in SLI are faster... here is your comparison. ~15-17% faster than a 6990 (everything @ stock speeds).

Definitely go with the 2x GTX580's!

A) Running in Surround with 3 monitors works good with my 2x GTX570's. 2x 580's would be better! The more horsepower the better.

B) The GTX580 cards are shorter than the 6990 (Length of card can be an issue with many cases).
