Well one more time around, off topic on set up. Had to up the anti - $1500 vs $1500

This time AMD 6990's crossfire vs Nvidia GTX 580's TRI SLI. Price vs Price. Run at higher resolution Extreme 2560X1600.

AMD6990 CrossfireX Vs EVGA GTX 580 in 3 way SLI on the Crysis Benchmark

AMD 6990 crossfire = 45 FPS vs Nvidia GTX 580 TRI SLI = 57 FPS

HD6990 CrossfireX Vs EVGA GTX 580 in 3 way SLI on the Heaven 2.5 DX11 Benchmark

AMD 6990 crossfire = 58.3 FPS vs Nvidia GTX 580 TRI SLI = 61.7 FPS

HD6990 CrossfireX Vs EVGA GTX 580 in 3 way SLI on the AvP DX11 Benchmark

AMD 6990 crossfire = 70.2 FPS vs Nvidia GTX 580 TRI SLI = 111.9 FPS

HD6990 CrossfireX Vs EVGA GTX 580 in 3 way SLI on the Metro 2033 DX11 Benchmark

AMD 6900 crossfire = 50.7 vs Nvidia GTX 580 TRI SLI = 48.6

Thanks for all this work goes to Trubritar YouTube site. Worth it to subscribe to his channel.

Both cards come close in some and not so much in others performance wise with this equally priced set up.

I'll end my posting on this site on this note....both AMD and Nvidia are great video card companies. There are different reasons why one person chooses one over the other. Everyone can have different results from their experience from card to card. It's great for us to be passionate more than others about this topic but no reason to take it out on each other.

It's in our favor we have these two companies in business in war with each other for our dollar. It means we as consumers benefit in price and performance. Though he didn't respond, from a different post, the original poster is going GTX 580's. He could have went either way and will have a great system.

I agree 100%.

The argument or disagreement was that it wasn't equally priced. Even though it was two cards vs a dual GPU (which is two cards on one pcb). So two more scenarios where shown.

1. Where equally priced AMD 6990 + AMD 6970 crossfire beat a Nvidia GTX 580 SLI set up. $1000 vs $1000.

2. Where equally priced Nvidia GTX 580 TRI SLI beat an AMD 6990 Crossfire set up. $1500 vs $1500. Which is three cards vs two dual GPU (which is four cards on two pcb).

It's like trying to choose between a red apple or green apple in a barrel when both taste just as good. LOL.

Yep. More options for people in the 1000$ price bracket. The more the better.

580 SLI with 1.5gb is not worth it. 6990+6970 is better and totally rape it. Nvidia should be ashamed to have put those on the market. And since they just convinced EVGA to finally produce 3GB 580 the same week the 6990 is coming out is totally proving my point.

It's NOT a coincidence. Benchmarks are now putting those 580 1.5Gb in a bad light, with limited VRAM. So Nvidia had to react. The SAME week. Point proven.

But 580 SLI with 3Gb (if tou can find one.. finding 2 is almost a miracle...) is another great option that can go head-to-head with 6990+6970 in the 1000$ price bracket.

No need to argue for no reason. We are here to have fun. And more options for people stalking the green and red markets!

And don't forget that all those videos you are so proud about of the 6990 were done with old 11.1 and 11.2 (not supporting the 6990, it wasn't out yet), or BETA 11.4 drivers. So in a month or 2, with official drivers, results will not be the same. Videos with BETA drivers are useless IMHO.

But for those hesitating on what to do in the 1000$, there is a new heavy hitter combo in town. And it's already rockin with beta drivers.

BTW, with my 6990+6970 combo, playing Crysis, Stalker COP Complete, AVP and Metro 2033 last night with every settings maxed-out was really something!!!!! Pure eye-candy!!! And smooth fps!

Who would have taught that possible 3 months ago for 1000$?

Not with 580 SLI vanilla version, and that limiting 1.5Gb VRAM. Impossible with Nvidia at 2560X1600 4AA/8AA... But possible with AMD. And for the same price!

Also played Dragon Age 4 hours in a row last night, max res, max AA, max AF , every settings maxed out, and with the PC high-texture pack! without a single freeze/bug/crash/BSOD!... fluid fps... running cool... no overheating, it didn't melt my computer, not noisy ... and blah blah blah. And with BETA 11.4 drivers!

Great cards. 6990+6970 is working great. Smooth fps all along. 1000$ for that experience. Impressive.

I had a great night playing those games all maxed out for the first time yesterday. It was great.

That's why we are all here. To have fun. Don't forget that. Have fun guys, and a great week-end! Enjoy the days off, and go play some games!

If you put out a product and it's still with beta drivers = they'd like to be on top, even if its for a small amount of time until the Nvidia puts their dual gpu card out and trumps it. Also their fault for thinking your not going to get judged on it on it's release date. Excuses, excuses.

By the time they get the drivers straight, Nvidia has also bumped theirs and we're back to the same level of performance. EVERY single release.

Rapes?

Those videos show the GTX 580 SLI > AMD 6990 ( though it's not equal in price, I'll give you that, it's two cards vs two card on one pcb) - GTX 580 TRI SLI > AMD 6990 Crossfire price per price - and yes your right AMD 6990 + AMD 6970 > GTX 580 SLI - price per price.

I'm done on this thread as I've proven my point and most reading will only go by the facts. Unless they too lean one way over another, you just can't make them see the light with facts and be partial no matter what.

I did subscribe to his channel as he does nice work. I like how he can process the video to put two setups side by side, show FPS and wattage. You can even see differences in micro-stuttering.

Three 580s in Tri-SLI beating Two 6990s in Quad-XFire is pretty impressive. With far less micro-stuttering to boot. Although, AMD does have a power use advantage.

P.S. The original poster has a 850 watt psu. He can't run the AMD 6990 and a AMD 6970 so that solution won't work for him. However he can choose between one AMD 6990 or GTX 580 SLI with just enough power. So for his situation I can understand his post question. He's got to decide if paying an extra $250 is worth the extra performance.

In his case he could also buy two GTX 570 SLI and have just a tad more power for the same amount of money. He would get to decide if he wants a dual gpu or two single for his power supply.
This isn't an upgrade for my Sig Rig, this an upgrade to the one i sold, a q660 680i 8800gt setup, the new power supply will be a corsair ax 1200

Anways i decided to go with the 580's for now. I will slowly start buying the Monitors for trip screen setup and i am in the process of building my man cave in the basement right now and once all that is completed i'm going to stick the 580's in my sig rig and prbably have to upgrade the power supply then. And buy some Radeon cards because thier Vram>than Nvidia unless u wanna hunt down the gainward 3GB versions, and buy them at a even steeper price.

one 580 is better than a 6970 so the 6990cannot be the better choice if you take in consideration the 6990 have a lot of problem with driver amd are always late with that 2x580 will be much worth it and more safe . for less hassle .
