well all things considered i am gonna go with the 580's, probably the gigabyte ones with the modded cooling design.... i just saw the 6990 and was like "oooooo shiny!" but having read all the replies I am just going to go with the best out there cause i want the build to have the longest life i can give it i just saw a chance to maybe skimp a little but then i realized this build was never meant to skimp on things, which is why i will get the 2600k over the 2500 for the extra performance, the future proofing, and the unknown which is the future. Might pay off by getting the best later down the road
As for holding off for the 590, i have been holding off since the 6800 series always wondering what around the corner, plus i have now sold my older Q6600 socket 775 rig and need a replacement. If you keep wondering whats around the corner you'll never buy anything lol

Get a pair of GTX 580's in SLi they are faster and the quality of the drivers is much better.

I would of gone the 6990 my self but never mind..

I'm actually VRAM limited at 1080p with 1Gb on my 5850's...

If you like running games with modded texture packs the 580's will quickly become swamped.

Something to think about

This. +1.

For 1000$, the 6990+6950 (unlock) will rape 580 SLI (vanilla 1.5GB VRAM version) on a true high-res high AA/AF and or multiple screen set-ups. Here's the proof. 6990 is already around 85% of 580 SLI for 300$ less!

So put an unlocked 6950 on top of it and it will leave the 580 SLI set-up behind... For the same price (at least in Canada..).

If your going a multiple monitor, and want to play with max aa, the 1.5gb version of the 580 is not enough, you would have to try and locate the 3gb models which stores(including online) are having trouble keeping them in stock because there so hot.. the vram on the 6990 and upcoming 590 will help or even the 2gb amd cards.

i have one 30" monitor 2560x1600 and i have to have aa off or the games are not playable... it feels like my computer is gunna freeze so keep that in mind

Stop copy and pasting this. You could get tri sli 570s for the same price and rape that, its not the POINT. Have fun with microstutter ect.
