Crossfire allows it and you can even overclock each card to its maximum. You don't have to have them running at the same clock speeds.

ok i see so when using Nvidia the Cards must match exactly? also if i were running at 1080p and wanted to span to multiple monitor setup, what does that change the res to to span across 2, and 3 monitors. is the formula like this 1 monitor =1920x1080, 2 monitors =????x1080p, 3 monitors = ????x1080p? and i understand that limts are being pushed even further nowdays and this is where you run into vram on the cards problems with limitation. SO the higher res you game at takes More ramm on the video card correct? and when tri firing the AMD cards will the games use the collective MB from each card or say if you have a 2gb card and a 1gb card, the 1gb card will drag down the 2gb with it, or does it see it as 3GB it can use?

6990
1. more frame buffer
2. 1 pci-e slot
3. Less power consumption
4. more effective for multi monitor setups.
5. 6990 $700 vs Gtx 580 sli $1000+
6. The cpu is the bottle neck now
7. Awesome overclocking potential

Even tho the 6990 has 4gb of ram
it is 2gb per chip.

Its the same thing as having 6970s in sli
You max frame buffer is still 2gb

i don't doubt it will be faster, its like comparing 1000 hp to 1050hp car
at some point it really does not matter anymore.

XD

But when it comes down to it, i would just buy 2 6950s and flash them...

I do like AMD, but the 6990 seems to have been very rushed. Two factors no one hear seems to have considered are power draw and noise. If you want to overclock this thing, have fun with $150 + electric bills every month, although I'm sure you could make that argument for any SLI setup as well. Secondly, the noise factor is something you really need to consider. Multiple reviews have mentioned that this thing is louder than 6970's in CF and on top of the fan noise, you get annoying hissing from the VRM's. This may be moot, since you seem intent on the SLI'd 580's, but something to consider when you're buying any card...If you're still even considering this card, I would wait for more mature drivers and some aftermarket cooling solutions (Toxic from Sapphire, DirectCU from ASUS etc..)

It's funny seeing all those 580 owners attack a small 40X40 avatar of my wife, making more money with professionnal work in a couple of shooting then they can dream of doing in 1 year... But it's ok for me.

But hey, when you are out of intelligent things to say, and know that the other one is right, then you use personnal attack. The usual internet trick for those without anything useful to answer.

I can understand the anger, rage and frustration, when your 3 months old 1000$ 580 SLI set-up is spank badly by 3 GPUs from AMD for the same price...

So if it's helping you keeping your sanity and keep your e-peen rockin by commenting a small 40X40 avatar, then be my guest.

But before the ban hammer come knocking, you should stop those stupid 12-years-old-living-in -parents-basement remarks. Just saying.

I guess some people would rather have e-peen than a hot wife. One dude on the Nvidia forum was so hurt by the release of the 580's overshadowing his SLI 480's that he kept harping on how his two 480's would beat down a single 580.
Levesque, can't wait to see your tri-fire benches. Once you get them under water you will be set for quite a while.

1. Dual GPU's don't over clock well. Ask actual owners. Single cards OC greater in SLI, TRI, or Quad.
2. Heat issues on one card acting as two is a problem but usually manageable.
3. AMD 6990 < GTX 580 SLI but $710 < $1000.
4. One AMD 6990 runs 4 monitors - so does two GTX 580's.
5. Bugs & Drivers get fixed quicker on single cards for the masses over 1000 or so dual GPU owners. Less driver issues and bugs in other words for single cards owners, some issues on dual GPU's never get addressed from what I've read.

Off OP - you can crossfire two AMD 6950's or SLI GTX 570's and be very comparable in performance and price. You can crossfire two AMD 6970's or SLI GTX 580's and beat out the AMD 6990 or even GTX 590 albeit at a higher price.

I'm learning if your motherboard is limited and you only have enough for one PCIe slot or you want almost quad power but only have two or three PCIe slots than go with dual GPU. Otherwise the single cards in crossfire or SLI will always be the better solution. So it's an alternate solution for some, power supply limitations obviously also taken into consideration.

Just some tid bits I thought I'd make correction to from other posts I've read on this thread that were slightly inaccurate.
