Unity - Page 2

For a full desktop I really like openbox w/ tint2. So customizable and if you want to make menu setup easier you can just use menumaker or one of the various gui frontends.

I haven't tried a tiling wm before, I really should one of these days.

no, how do i explain this.

i've noticed a lot things failing in OSS cause they try to be too like something in windows...to me OpenOffice is a complete failure, and so is libre office, instead of being their own Office Suite, they Try being a MS office clone...and as us true red blooded americans who drink whole milk can tell you, "soy" milk is a far cry from it...

look at firefox, they didn't try to be IE, they tried to be different and better than IE, and for the most part, they have succeeded. 13 year old white boys who have unnatural obsessions with cartoon girls, who use "japanese" slang in their speak, are not japanese...

i just dont' want linux to be "like" windows or mac, i want linux to be linux.

kde has always been a windows like UI clone, but there is plenty to KDE that separates it from windows with each new version, i hope the dev's will come to their senses, and continue down their current path and develop KDE, not Windows GUI for Linux.

part of this is due to ubuntu pushing linux onto the desktop, some of it is linux dev's growing tired of being consider "second rate" or "under dogs", but whatever the reason, the community needs to save ubuntu, gnome, kde and xfce from their dev's, before they do something seriously stupid and copy windows or osx outright...

Yeah thats how I got introduced to it. I went from that to archbang and then eventually just arch. Tint2 is such a great panel, you can really make it look anyway you want.

i highly prefer something like openbox for linux with a good panel rather than something ridiculous trying to imitate a windows or mac interface

i did like gnome when i used it because it is simple enough you can customise it quite a bit you didnt HAVE to take the osx clone route...

but the way ubuntu is going with "unity" and gnome is going with the "gnome shell" it makes me kinda sad...

KDE is just KDE either love it or hate it... kde is pretty cool if you configure it enough lol defaults are usually really bleh xD

So far Gnome shell is an epic fail. The Arch devs aren't even sure they will even support Gnome 3.0.

It does have a fallback though, which I'm painfully aware of. The Gnome devs have a live CD demoing Gnome 3, although it doesn't work on any hardware, because Gnome 3 requires 3d acceleration, and they neglected to install any proprietary drivers on the live cd. It fails in Virtualbox, fails with ATI graphics, fails with Intel graphics, fails with nVidia graphics, and the only way to fix it is to install the drivers and do a reboot to load the new kernel... except its a live cd.

I've installed video drivers on a live CD. It was complete and utter hell, though, and took most of a day. Don't go there.

As for Unity, so I downloaded the natty CD and fired it up, and I don't see what the big issue is? Can someone explain what's so terribly wrong with it?

Its terribly inefficient from a UI standpoint.

If I want to switch windows I have to click the little start button, find the window, which isn't even named, click it, then click again to hide the menu.

The whole process takes 4-5 times as long as it does in Gnome or KDE. If you're switching windows 500 times a day thats a good 30 minutes of wasted time.

The menu is even worse, given that its hidden away in an icon, and even after you click it you only have a few options, until you have to manually show them all.

Then there is the whole titlebar fixed at the top crap, which in past experience with UNR breaks on a lot of non-ubuntu apps, resulting in excess clutter.

The whole package is bad. Its like OSX, but buggy and slow. (I could probably write a paper on the bad UI choices in OSX)

It loads, it just complains that there isn't an 3d acceleration and goes back to the good Gnome.

probably just need guest additions or something, try vmware player, see if that does any better

and what MOST people want (including me) from a UI is simple and efficient... gnome shell and unity are neither really :/
