Thermal Pad vs Thermal Grease Laptop GPU

So apparently I was replacing the CPU and applied my Artic Cooling MX-2 on the CPU for my laptop. However, the GPU (4650) has a thermal pad.

Should I leave it on or should I take it off and apply my MX2?

Which would be better?

If the surface of the gpu is smooth and looks like the cpu, along with the heatsink being smooth, then you should, but if it looks something like this:

Leave the pad on.

Yep it's smooth and shiny. I'm concerned with paste not having enough volume to touch the heatsink...

So paste should work fine if the GPU has a smooth surface?

leave the pad. If u put thermal paste on instead, there would probably be space between the contact points.

you could put paste between the pad and the GPU and the heatsink. Also, thaere are some high quality pads online. You can also try a copper spacer between the CPU and GPU, that will cool the GPU better than a pad. I've seen some people even do this with penny's that have been grinded and lapped on both sides

Only old pennies though.

Recent ones are mostly zinc, which is no where near as good a thermal conductor as copper.

My quad CPU despite having 2x more TDP than the dual runs 10'C cooler...awesome.

But my GPU now runs into the 90s'C and idles 10'C hotter...so I'll have to disassemble my laptop again. F-M-L


I'm going to try buying one of those copper thermal pads...

Well, the problem is finding the right thickness. You need to be pretty spot on to ensure contact, this is why my old gateway is being sold for parts lol, overheating GPU.

Dissolve the pad with some isopropyl alcohol, apply thermal paste. Done.

I have done that do every GPU die I have come across with a pad, it has always run cooler (including my mobo's onboard GPU)
