Need help choosing for a laptop

Thread Starter
Hello, I know there's like 10000x of this thread, I am sorry but worry not it will sink as soon as I get my answer.
I'm going to college soon so I'm looking for a laptop. I need it for classes and stuff but I'd also like to maybe watch some movie or play some SC2/HoN on it.
I was looking at system76, a laptop builder that uses unbuntu,
Sager (which seems to be the EXACT same thing for all the laptops except Sager uses Windows 7),
Mac (very not sure about this as I'm totally against the apple ripping off so much people) and the google Cr-48

I have never used Ubuntu but I've head that linux is much better than windows 7 so at first I'm going towards system76 as a first choice.
I'm interested in their thin portable 13" laptop, http://www.system76.com/product_info...roducts_id=106 ,
but I've heard that the battery is absolute **** ( 2hours ).
Also, I don't really like the look of that laptop, even if the size and budget fits me.
I would preffer more of a aluminium case laptop (It has to look like I want it, I can't fight it heh) and apple offers that but their laptop are ****.

So could you guys suggest me some good laptop for around 1000$ and 13"-15"
Main use is college but I will also a bit of games and maybe watch some movies.

Anybody has the cr-48 here ? Would it be a good notebook for college ?
Also, how much should I buy it ?

Thank you very much

Edit: One more thing I forgot to ask, is it possible to have, for example, a 500gb HDD in a laptop and installing a SSD with thaty or its either HDD or SSD?

On the HDD question, no. Unless the laptop has room for 2 harddrives for a dual bay (Which is only seen in large 15"+ laptops), there is no other way to have 2 HDD's in a laptop

you wont be gaming on the system you posted. first gen iseries igp....

options are, m11x, sager5160, if your concerned about battery life and still want to game, also theres some other laptops with the 4250amd switchable gfx, then the new amd fusion does well too.

and yes you can have both HDD+SSD; but you will probably have to remove your optical drive as almost all systems dont offer 2 HDD slots+optical.

Which is what I gave you. The 540m (np5160) and m11x (335m) are optimus based cards, and will play those games fine, but new games you'll have to play on low-medium. You can probably get away with the cheap fusion laptops.

The most powerful ultraportable sub-13" @ a reasonable price, is

Acer's 3820TG w/ Intel i5 and ATI 6550.

Sadly, it's not available within the USA. You can always order international.

here is a graphics comparison:

disk drives are obsolete

beware many of the models sold in Canada (@ Staples) only sell it with the ATI 5470.

The one you want will have switchable graphics with an ATI 5650 or 6550

chouka let us know how u like it

Hey, so Im can't really choose between the asus laptop, which will be running ubuntu, or a
MBP.
As I said earlier I'm really not a fan of apple, but I really like the MBP.
So am I getting ripped off that bad if I'm buying the MBP ( I know ill get ripoff anyways buying apple products ) and is OSX really worth it ?
