To wait or not to wait . . .

Thread Starter
I've been an AMD / ATI guy for many years, and I see no real reason to change now. Even though the i7 has wonderful performance, I have to stay loyal to my AMD family.

My current rig is listed below. It's going on a year and half old or so now and runs everything I need just fine, but I've gotten the bug to upgrade yet again. This time I'm going all out with custom WC loop, the new Caselabs M8, going from a single 5870 1gb to dual 5870 2gb cards, and all new mobo and proc.

Which brings me to my question. I was all set the past couple of months to buy a a Phenom II x6 and a Crosshair IV formula. Now I'm starting to see posts about the new bulldozer line coming out this summer and I'm torn. I know benches won't be out until launch, and I'm just starting to research bulldozer . . .

But my question remains - Do I go with the 6 core and CHIV mobo or wait 3-6 months to get the new line??

Any opinions or what other folks considering upgrading are thinking is welcome.

Wait. The x6 will give you a little performance gain but nothing compared to what bulldozer is supposed to bring. 1.5x the i7 I think is what they're advertising and even though the i7 920/30/50 are 4 yearsish old, thats still a huge step up from the phenoms

I would wait till bulldozer. Even if you don't want bulldozer you can get the x6 after and it has a good chance of being cheaper then as well.

I am holding off until bulldozer comes out before I do anything, I was debating an x6 when they were released. I definitely want to stick with AMD for the processor, so its just a painful waiting game.

Considering your comp doesn't actualy need to be upgraded, I would wait . You never know just how much better the new line is going to be, and even if you dent get the new line, the old ones will probably drop in price. Just my opinion though

You don't have to stay loyal, you should (Bulldozer ftw). I would probably wait for BD and the 7000 series GPU's.

I'd buy the case and any extra components that don't really necessitate periodic upgrading. Save the rest of the cash for Bulldozer.

Thanks for the thoughts all. It pains me to say it, but I agree with you all . . . just didn't want to admit it. I think I will end up doing the new build anyway and just hold off buying a mobo and proc until bulldozer is released.

I'd wait...I'm in the same boat you are...my rig plays anything I throw at it, but I'm not happy about my folding results... I can't switch to the dark side and go with a sandybridge so I'll just sit back and wait for Bulldozer and hope it's good!
