6970 or CF 6870?

Thread Starter
Hey all.

So I'm sure this kind of question is asked a lot but, while I've found some threads that deal with the 6900's vs. 6800's, I'm looking for updated opinions what with constant price-shifts, ownership experience, and whatnot.

While I know that the 6870 is a mid-range product and the 6970 is enthusiast, I've read that the 6870 really hits the sweet-spot on the price/performance ratio. I'm usually a single GPU kinda guy, but the cost of getting one 6870 now and another perhaps in 8 months or so, would ultimately equate to the price of a 6970.

Considering the similar costs, which do you guys think would be better? Crossfired 6870's? Or a single 6970?

Should I even consider a 6950, or should I just stick to the 6*70's?

Stick to one card because in 8 months something better will be out and no point to go CF. Get the HD 6950 for $260 and unlock it. Much cheaper then HD 6970 and much faster then HD 6870 for only a bit more.

Ya I totally agree with this. I definitely love paying for a step-down product and getting the step-up specs (love my unlocked Phenom II X3). I had just thought that perhaps the 6870 cf would ultimately be faster than the the single 6950---ref. link.

Oh and Significant Edit:

I use a single 1920x1080 monitor. So the benefits of Eyefinity don't really apply to me unfortunately. Would a 2GB card be overkill for a single display setup? Although I'm sure 2GB will become the norm in 3 years...

The 6870 is a great GPU, basically 5870 performance with superior tessellation and better scaling.
But get the 6970.
It flies.

smile.gif

For some games, 1920 X 1080 and 1920 X 1200 can be taxing to run on max settings/AA/AF/MSAA/tessellation on/ etc etc.

Its great for now and will still kickass for Crysis 2, Rift and all the new stuff that's really starting to use DX11 and these newer technologies.

Actually, the 2GB Radeon 6950 fits that bill IMO especially with the high chance that it can be unlocked and OCed to be just as fast as a Radeon 6970. Must be the 2GB version...the 1GB version will not unlock.
