Picking my First headphone amp

Thread Starter
i have ATH-A700 Audiophile Closed-back Dynamic Headphones.
http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/he...6d2/index.html

I will be hooking it up to be between my pc and headphones for music.

Been looking at headphone amps for a while now, and i still don't really know what to get, primarily because i still don't know what i am looking for. I did what any normal person would do and googled it tell i couldn't find any more varied information. Thats why i am asking all of you(overclock Hi-Fi members).

For manufactured amps i was looking at the FiiO E7 and FiiO E9. can pick them up on amazon for around 100$ each. Didn't really think that would be the best way to get into headphone amps so i googled some more and found some very price headphone amps around 350$ and up. didn't want to spend that much so i kept searching and came across some informations about building your own (DIY).

It seemed to me that the DIY is the best bang for buck(for obvious reasons) but i would rather buy a pre-built one. Found some on ebay, witch leads me to my question...

Should i buy a pre-built amp, a DIY amp or buy the FiiO E7 or E9? if so, what one.

For the DIY amp and pre-built amp what one should a beginner get?

Thanks Overclock.net guys, you always help me out with my Tech questions. You have made me among my friends the guy to go to with any sort of technology based question.

PS: my price range is around 100.

You don't need an amp. You really won't benefit from one with those headphones. You'd be much better off investing in a better sound card (such as a Xonar Essence).

Get a DAC before getting an amp.

I recommend the NuForce uDAC-2.

An amplifier boosts the power of a signal. In this case, the signal is the one from your sound card. Once again, your sound card is lacking.

Honestly, I don't get the DAC idea unless you're dedicated to just running headphones and listening to music. You're on the right track, though.

Have your friend do a blind test. See if he can actually tell a difference.

Summary: Barten you should be really be getting a better sound card. An amplifier will not help you particularly since it's a low-impedance headphone. If music is what you're looking for, then you should grab a Xonar DX or D1. Out of all the sound cards I have tried, it honestly is the best bang for buck with some great components and really great application of relays (mechanical switches operated by magnetism).
