Future Build - Need advice!

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. I'm planning to build in the future (at the start of summer 2011).

This will be the first rig I build.

Here are the parts I picked out.

The case looks pretty good, and since it's mesh and has 6 fans I'm guessing it has good ventilation.

I definitely want the 2500k, and a mobo with the P67 chipset for overclocking.

I think the hard drive I picked out is pretty good, however if there's anything wrong (like price) let me know.

I'm planning to CF the 6950 when I have the money / feel the need to.

PSU, RAM and mouse pad (lol) look good to me..

I don't know much about buying keyboards and mice, so if anybody could give me advice on that, it'd be helpful. I just chose things with high ratings.

So what do you guys think overall of my build? And thanks in advance for any and all advice.

I say ditch the 6950 for a 560 and overclock the hell out of it, but that's just my Nvidia side speaking. And I'd replace that WD drive with a Samsung Spinpoint F3. Everything else looks good though.

Yeah I was going to put the 560 until I saw that the 6950 performs better. And also, according to a review I just read, the 6950 OC's better and therefore does better, so I'll stick with the 6950.

and the Samsung is only SATA II.

My suggestions are to replace the WD Caviar Black with a Samsung F3, and try to find some lower latency RAM.

Other than that, looks good!

The drive doesn't even saturate SATA II, there's no reason to shell out more money for SATA III.

What latency should I be looking for?

Does this look good?

And what do you mean by saturate?

The CL looks good, but I'd stick with 1600MHz RAM. So this, this, or this would be good. All depends on how much you want to spend.

The maximum data transfer rate (bandwidth) over SATA II is around 300 MB/s. The average read/write speed of a WD Caviar Black drive is about a third of this. So there is no reason to spend extra to buy a drive that operates at SATA III specifications if the drive can't even saturate the bandwidth of SATA II.
Plus, the Samsung F3 is generally a faster drive than the WD Caviar Black.

thanks. i'll go with the 6 latency RAM.

and interesting on the hard drives. i'll get the F3.

Change that PSU, that one is only supported on some Antec case models (1200, 900 II) IIRC.

Go with a HX 750-850W.

Also, how is an unlocked 6950 flashed to 6970 compared to an OCed 560? (just wondering..)
