Looking to buy a new sound card

Thread Starter
I've been off the forums for a while now, focusing on school and work and such, and have come into a little money. For less than 200 dollars, what is the best sound card I can get for music/movies? I game a little on the side as well, but for the most part its just music listening. I've got some HD555s, looking to upgrade that to a pair of M50s.

Last I was on here, the best bang for the buck for my price range was the Asus Essence STX or the Auzentech X-Fi Forte, and I really liked that they had built-in headphone amplifications. Have things changed much? Is there a new or upcoming soundcard that has or will be superior than these at the price range?
Thanks in advance OC.

Thanks a lot! Quick question though, why not just order from excalibur directly?

Also, I'm assuming from that the Essence STX is still pretty much the best soundcard on the market?

In case you get a dud or don't really think the purchase was worth the money (very possible), you'll be able to return it easily if you bought it from your local Fry's. I recommend buying a DX and a STX, that you listen to both and that if you can REALLY hear a difference between the STX and a DX, to keep the STX and return the DX. Although that would depend on how good your headphones /speakers are too.

Also yes, the STX is first place for PC sound cards.

Does Asus have an application like Creative's "Creative Console Launcher". Is this card a good gaming card also. I never used an Asus sound card.

I have no idea about the "creative console launcher" but I promise you it's better for gaming than 99% of Creative cards.
