not everyone wants to run a multiple card setup, or can..... and if you have one of those mobos which sandwiches two cards together they can get VERY hot.

The card is not overpriced. The Nvidia 8800 Ultra was 830$ when it came out with a single GPU a couple of years not so long ago.

If you want it, buy it.

But you should think of going watercooling in the future if you want to buy the new top-of-the-line GPU from Nvidia or AMD. The 6990 and 590 are forgetting all power limits and are going all out! A new era for the Extreme GPUs is coming!

I really hope people buying the 590 or 6990 are really not thinking of using the stock coolers. Pleeeaaase. Those stock coolers are useless.

Those monsters need watercooling to OC them like crazy and control the heat.

The 1200 case can handle a 6990s cooling design. Cooler is going to be pretty loud under load though.

Seeing that you have a crosshair I'd suggest you get HD6970's and go crossfire and put that $50-60 bucks into something else like an Eyefinity set up.
There would be no point in buying a 6970 if he can buy a 6950 and unlock it

buy 2 6950's an crossfire using the 1st and 3rd slot on your mobo (so there not so close together), what am gonna do providing the crossfire bridge reaches
pros
cheaper
probably cooler
think its less power hungry too
cons
multiple cards (not a con for everyone i dont think)
If the crossfire bridge doesnt stretch i am guessing one of your cards is gonna get pretty warm

Also i could be wrong but IMO this is a better solution

thanks guys,

regarding the 6950 CF, I already have a long CF bridge suitable for use with slots 1 & 3.

I'd get the Asus 6950 OC, unlock it and oc it a bit to match the 6970 core speed? Would it be safer just to get the 6970s themselves?

I'm going to wait a month or two for things to settle and continue to use my 4890 single card config.

Unless the 6990 drops in price or a better cooling setup comes out ill most likely get the 6950s
