Making a game utilize that much RAM and still run on machines with 2-4GB is difficult. In fact, the reason most games don't go nuts with huge requirements is because only 1-2% of the people out there would have the hardware to run it. It takes a long time and money to create a game engine that can scale down to be able to run on 5+ year old computers, netbooks, tablets, integrated GPUs, and also fully utilize the latest DirectX/OpenGL tech (that came out while you were in the middle of making the engine no doubt), use 3-4 GPUs, use different speeds of I/O (from a 5400rpm 5+ year old laptop HD) up to a RAID0 SSD setup, and load smoothly in both cases.
